Sanjoy Hazarika Bereaved

Minal Hazarika wife of Sanjoy Hazarika, noted author, Journalist and Managing Trustee of Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES), passed away on at the Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi on April 3, 2009. She had suffered a stroke at Guwahati on 15 January 2009 and was undergoing treatment at Gangaram Hospital for nearly three months. She was in her fifties and was a well known figure in Assam and in New Delhi. She leaves behind a daughter (Meghna Hazarika) besides her husband. At this hour of grief we pray for the departed soul.

I never knew Mrs. Hazarika personally but I had a telecon with Mr. Hazarika and from what I have read of him and his films I have seen, at this moment my condolences and prayers are with him and his family.

I knew Sanjoy from our St. Edmund's school days in Shillong. Mrs Hazarika's work through C-NES has been an eyeopener for Indians vis-a-vis the North East. This loss is a great setback to propagation of the understanding of the psyche of northeasterners. May her soul rest in peace and may Sanjoy and Meghna have God's blessings to overcome this bereavement.

Dr Gohain, his delegation to meet PM on Monday

India win 22 medals in Asian Powerlifting Championship

Indian Powerlifters returned home with handful of medals from Asian Powerlifting Championship that concluded at Ullen Batter, Mangolia on May 7. India altogether collected 22 medals which included 9 golds, 8 silvers and 5 bronzes from the championship. Dr Gohain-led delegation leaves for Delhi

A delegation of civil society is leaving for Delhi on Saturday to help ULFA and the government break the deadlock over the talk. Main organizer Dr Hiren Gohain is understood to have received a call from the PMO to meet Manmohan Singh. But the schedule for the date with PM would be finalized only after they reach Delhi. ULFA attacks tea estate office

Sensation prevails in Tinsukia after suspected Ulfa men torched a tea estate office on Thursday. Four armed youth came to the manager's office of Bajrangapur tea garden and sought manager Indra Barua. Barua was not available. The angry youths vandalized the office and set some files on fire.
