Sanjoy Hazarika Bereaved

Minal Hazarika wife of Sanjoy Hazarika, noted author, Journalist and Managing Trustee of Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES), passed away on at the Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi on April 3, 2009. She had suffered a stroke at Guwahati on 15 January 2009 and was undergoing treatment at Gangaram Hospital for nearly three months. She was in her fifties and was a well known figure in Assam and in New Delhi. She leaves behind a daughter (Meghna Hazarika) besides her husband. At this hour of grief we pray for the departed soul.

I never knew Mrs. Hazarika personally but I had a telecon with Mr. Hazarika and from what I have read of him and his films I have seen, at this moment my condolences and prayers are with him and his family.

I knew Sanjoy from our St. Edmund's school days in Shillong. Mrs Hazarika's work through C-NES has been an eyeopener for Indians vis-a-vis the North East. This loss is a great setback to propagation of the understanding of the psyche of northeasterners. May her soul rest in peace and may Sanjoy and Meghna have God's blessings to overcome this bereavement.

Assam House begins winter session

The Assam Assembly begins its winter session with the address of the Assam governor S C Mathur on Monday morning. The session is expected to be a stormy one in the wake of the strings of blast, communal riot in the lower Assam. The Opposition parties have decided to stand united to corner the government on the floor during the five-day long session.

Fresh leads in 1/1 serial blast

City police have arrested one more person in connection with the 1/1 strike in Guwahati that left 6 persons dead and over 50 injured. According to information, police arrested one Sanjiv Talukdar from Rangiya on Sunday. Sanjiv, an ULFa cadre had frequent contact with the blast mastermind Pranjal Deka of the outfit's 709 Battalion. It is learnt that Sanjeev carried the bombs to Adabari area in the city at the instance of another 709 battalion cadre Khagen Kalita and that Panjal himself received the bombs from Sanjiv. Interrogation is on. It may be recalled that police have already arrested nine people in this connection a day after the serial blast rocked three places in the city.

Goods train damaged in explosion in NC hills

Three compartments of a goods train got damaged as militans exploded a poweful bomb on a railway track in North Cachhar district on Sunday morning. According to information, the incident took place between Maibongdisa and Harangajao stations in the hills disitct.According to Northeast Frontier railway sources, no report of injury to any person in the blast. Top ranked police officers along with railway officers have arrived on the spot. Investgation is on.

AP-BJP seat shaing begins

After days months of hectic political confabulations, the Opposition Asom Gana Parishad has struck seat sharing deal with the Bahratiya Janata Party for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. According to information, both the parties have finalised the deal firstly in four seats. The AGP is leaving Mongoldoi and Nagaon for the BJP and retains Dibrugarh and North Lakhimpur. Duibrugarh and Lakhimpur have AGP's sitting MPs while the Nagaon ahd Mongoldoi have BJP candidates. Seminar on wildlife crime

Nature's Friends Club, an environmental organization from Dhemaji had organized a seminar on abatement of wildlife crime through community participation at its office premises at Kachari Pathar near Botikur Tiniali (Dhemaji) on 3rd January.
