A day long workshop district level on the historic total solar eclipse of July 22, 2009 has been successfully organized at Mangaldoi on June, 23 for organization and institutions of Darrang and Udalguri district. The workshop was sponsored by Guwahati Planetarium and Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers ‘ Association Guwahati supported by department of Science and Technology, Govt. of Assam. Participants from more than 22 organizations and Institutions of Darrang and Udalguri district participated in the workshop, which was inaugurated at 10 am at Mangaldoi Youth Club by Prof. B.K.Medhi, Principal Mangaldoi College. Dr. Buddhin Ch. Hazarika, convener, Darrang welcomed all the guests and participants and requested them to prepare for the safe watching of the great event to be occurred on July, 22/09. Jayanta Kumar Das, convener of Udalguri district in his introductory speech explained about the programme undertaken by Guwahati Planetarium and Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers ‘ Association Guwahati, supported by department of Science and Technology, Govt. of Assam for the safe watching of the historic event to be occurred only after 900 years later.Major Rajat Choudhuri of 65 Field regiment,Mangaldai also spoke a few words on the occasion assuring all kinds of help and cooperation from army for such programmes in Darrang and udalguri district.Madhab sarmah,principal JNV (Jawahar Novadaya Vidyalaya )Darrang in his speech as the guest of honor expressed happiness at the arrangements done for the rural people.He assured that JNV Kalaigaon would do everything for the promotion of science and technology in the rural areas of Darrang district.( It needs mention that JNV, Darrang had provided sufficient technical assistance for the workshop). Child scientist Arindam Mani Das of Kalaigaon; R. Singh and H. Dhing both teachers of JNV Darrang presented multimedia demonstration on stars and planets including other celestial bodies to the delight of the participants.Dr.Khalilur Rahman, former HOD department of physics,Mangaldai College as an expert speaker introduced the celestial bodies. He also explained about both solar and lunar eclipses. U. N. Deka, Secretary Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers ‘ Association, Guwahati planatorium explained about the programmes undertaken by Guwahati Planetarium and Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers ‘ Association Guwahati supported by department of Science and Technology, Govt. of Assam for creating awareness among the people of the state. He also explained about the safety measures to be taken during the total solar eclipse of the longest duration of the century. According to him the next such solar eclipse would occur on June 3, 2114 AD. At end of the workshop, solar filters were distributed among the participants free of cost for safe solar eclipse watching. In a very tragic and barbaric incident, Puspanjali Das (19)wife of Chandan Debnath of Thakuriapara village under Bhergaon sub-division in Udalguri district has been burnt down alive on Saturday noon for non-payment of marriage dowry. The incident has shocked the district. The lady was put in a sac before thrown in a fire lighted in a heap of hay. Puspanjali was married to Chandan just three months bac.
