Felicitation to media fellows in press club

The winners of Birsingh Majhi Memorial and ERD Foundation fellowships were felicitated at a brief function held at the Guwahati Press Club on Thursday. Both the fellowships were being conducted by the press club.


The fellows were handed over the first part of their assured money in today’s function by Prithibi Majhi, who was present in the function with his wife Tarulata Kakati Majhi. Similarly representative of ERD foundation Rose Mahanta handed over the first part of the assured amount to Jishnu Medhi of NE Television, who will study various aspects of pavement dwellers (primarily beggars) of Guwahati under the fellowship sponsored by the ERD Foundation.


The first chain of fellowships, sponsored by Prithibi Majhi and his family, would cover a comprehensive study of tea industry with fish production and role of women journalists in Assam. The fellowship on the ‘Economy of Tea Plantations (of Assam)’ was awarded to Ranen Kumar Goswami, a Guwahati based senior journalist. Goswami will make a comprehensive study about the tea industry of Assam, for which he will be offered a financial support of Rs. 40,000/- (Rupees forty thousand only).


The next fellowship on the tea plantation workers addressing the administration, welfare and other socio-cultural issues related to them went to Prabal Kumar Das of The Assam Tribune. The four month long fellowship will provide him equal amount of money as that of the first one.


The fellowship on ‘Women in Assam based Media’ was offered to Sabita Lahkar, another Guwahati based freelance journalist. Her study will include the challenge of women in the media and some significant success stories of Assam, for which she will be given Rs. 20,000/- (Rupees twenty thousand only).


Another two month long fellowship on fish production (in Assam) was awarded to Arup Jyoti Mahanta of Dainik Agradoot. The fellowship, which covers a comprehensive study on Assam's potentiality in fish production and possibility of self dependence in future, will bring equal amount of money as of the third one.


Sponsored by ERD Foundation, Guwahati the fifth fellowship is expected to encourage the fellow for an in-depth study (and report) about the issue of pavement dwellers. The fellow will try to analyze the reason behind their homelessness, categorization and also the security aspect of the homeless persons in the city, for which he will be paid Rs 15,000 (fifteen thousand only).


The final outcome of all the fellowship programme will be compiled and published in a book form for the benefit of general readers. Before that the fellows will prepare a number of articles for publication in the newspaper on their respective study areas, stated in a release issued by the press club secretary Nava Thakuria.

Congratulations to the fellowship holders. Congratulations to Prithibi Majhi and ERD Foundation for coming up with such a novel idea of providing fellowships for such research work. And, most importantly, Congratulations for selecting worthy persons for the mentioned work....all the above media persons are pursuing 'Genuine' Journalism.

Japanese encephalitis: toll 17 in Sivasagar

Japanese encephalitis have claimed several lives in upper Assam. According to information, at least 17 people, including children, have died due to Japanese encephalitis in Sivasagar district some this month. More than 50 others have been under going treatment at the Asam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh. Eastern Fare Music Foundation - a will to succeed

Jim Ankan Deka, becomes the first Assamese to open a music institution and a production house in Bangalore, India. Eastern Fare Music Foundation had its origination in 2007. Presently the foundation has six institutions and two recording studios. While Jim is the proprietor, two of his friends Mr Anand PM from Kerala and Miss Parmita Borah from Assam help him in running the show. Flood affects 500 villages in Assam

Children from flood affected families take meal at a relief camp in Sivasagar district of on July 12. The flood situation all over the state has been critical since the beginning of July as the water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are still flowing above the danger level. The current wave of flood in the past week has left about 400,000 people displaced in over 500 villages in the four districts of Assam. Two children died in the last 24 hours in the district. The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) said a section fake ULFA activists are on an extortion spree in the state. Major strike averted; 7 miscreants held in NC hills

A major orgy of violence was averted in North Cachar hills distirct on Wedneday when altogether seven Naga miscreants have been arrested during a joint operation by army and police in Mahur area. According to information, the miscreants who were apprehended at a tiny hamlet Impai were coming to strike in the area with a huge cache of arms and ammunition. Investigations are in progress. It may be recalled that over 25 persons were killed and more than 250 houses were set on fire during the last two months in the orgy of violence in the hills district where the Zeme Naga and Dimasa people were worst affected.

3 killed, over 30 hurt in tragic road mishap

Three persons were killed, over 35 others have been injured when a passenger bus fell on a bridge in Burhaparah on the way to Jorhat on Wednesday morning. According to information, three persons including the driver died on the spot and the injured ones have been rushed to the Jakhalabandha hospital. A few of the seriously injured persons have been rushed to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital. The reason of the accident, however, has yet to be ascertained. Investigations are on.

Farmer killed in NC hills

In the continuing orgy of ethnic violence, unidentified armed miscreants shot dead a farmer and injured his minor son in N.C. Hills district on Tuesday. According to information, the incident took place in the morning when unidentified gunmen fired on a group of farmers at Daotuhaja near Maibong killing the farmer and injuring his seven-year-old son. The incident took pace ten hours after a Dimasa woman and her child were killed by suspected Zeme-Naga miscreants in Natunwari village, during the day-long bandh called by several organisations to protest the clashes between the two tribes.
