Mahapurush Sri Sri Madhabdeva tithi observed at Barpeta

The death anniversary of Mahapurush Sri Sri Madhabdeva was observed at Barpeta Satra (Assamese monastery) by conducting a traditional Kirtan Mahotsava. Kirtans are devotional songs sang in the local language. According to the tradition, a regular prasanga(prayer) was held in the morning and later the gayan- bayans performed gurughata and then Bhojan Byebahaar was held. In the evening Ghosa Kirtan, Byah Kirtan, and at night Bardemeli were performed.


In Dakshin Hati, devotees of Sri Sri Madhabdeva took out procession in accordance with the xatriya tradition. Gayan-bayan, Xatriya performances took place and a group of devotees sang Naam-Kirtan and gave Karbhar( a tradition at Barpeta xatra). The performance of naam specially Thiya- Naam which is popular all over Assam and abroad attracted the audience who participated in the event by listening raptly and bowing their heads in devotion to Lord Krishna. Thiya Naam sings praise of Lord Krishna.

Barpeta Anchalik AASU remembered the martyrs

On the eve of 15 August, Barpeta anchalik AASU remembered the martyrs of Assam movement with the lightening of the lamp of 855 earthen lamps at Barpeta Panch-Ali Chowk on Sunday. After the 25 years of Assam accord barpeta district AASU remembered these martyrs. This programme was inaugurated by Jagannath das, and Satya Krishna Misra, of Barpeta. Dead body of the servant recovered

A dead body of a girl servant namely Krishna Medhi was recovered in a pond at Gandhi Nagar area at Barpeta town on Sunday night. According to report, Krishna Medhi was the servant at one Dwijen Das residence, workers of LIC, Barpeta branch of Barpeta Gandhinagar. Mentionable that the dead Krishna Medhi had been worked as a servant somany years at the house of Dwijen Das. The local people of the area found her dead and rushed to the sadar police station of Barpeta. The local people and Krishna’s family members wanted to say it as a murder. The police caught Dwijen das, for interrogation. But there was no case filed till filing this report.

4 killed in Barpeta police firing

Four people died and over 50 others have been injured when police opened fire on a group of student protesters trying to stall government proceedings of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Barpeta on Wednesday. NCERT curriculum to be started from 2011 academic session
