Deepavali, one of the festival celebrated all over the country by Hindu people. Deepavali means different things to people of different states of the country, in keeping with the different legends associated with this festival of light and sound. Irrespective of the reason behind the celebration, the spirit of Deepavali comes alive through illuminating sparklers and loud crackers. The celebration of Deepavali starts after Laxmi Puja and the wholesale and retail sales of crackers starts 15 days before Deepavali. The sound of crackers and rows of candle lights decorate the festival. But now-a day it is usually noticed that people pay less interest in lights and its become their pleasure to burn costly crackers. The huge sound that emits from those crackers are really disturbing and it also cause air pollution too. The interest of crackers are usually found among the teenagers or youths. But when the youths will come out to check this pollution then we can say that 75% of this problem is tackled.


Today, the students of Nowgong college in Nagaon, a city of north eastern Indian state Assam took oath that they are not going to pollute the atmosphere with crackers. They all decided to light the earthen lamp to decorate the Deepavali festival. They also urge the people to come forward to support and to save the environment being polluted with the crackers. The students of Nowgong college gathered and at around 11.30 am in the morning they pledged that they will avoid using the crackers this Deepavali.

Good initiative.Nagoan college students had done good things for the society. I feel brusting crackers in dipawali is a waste of money and time and instead drain away ones pocket money and does harmful to human beings by polluting air.There is no logic in celebrating puja by brusting crackers.

Traditional buffalo fight in Nagaon

It was a carnival like atmosphere at Jalah Village of Nagaon district in Assam as a boisterous crowd cheered at enraged buffaloes locking horns. The owners of buffaloes cajoled their tame animals to fight and win for them a prize. The village of Jalah, buzzed with activity on Sunday morning with the locals organising the annual buffalo fight. Police seize pirated CDs in Nagaon

A team of police raided the Panorama market in Borbazar area of Nagaon town on December 22 and seized more than ten thousands pirated audio and video discs from various shops of the market. No one was arrested so far in this connection. The piracy has greatly hampers the producers and film makers. The step taken by the police has greatly appreciated by the local citizens of Nagaon.

NYK Coordinator arrested in Nagaon

The district youth coordinator of Tezpur NYK Mehbub Alam Laskar who is also in the additional charge Nehru Yuva Kendra Nagaon was arrested by the police on December 21 night from the complex of Youth Hostel Nagaon. The FIR was lodged at Itachali police outpost in Nagaon town by the women participants of Assam team of National Integration Camp held on December 15-19 at the Youth Hostel campus. Rs 2.5 Lakh looted in Nagaon

An amount of Rupees Two Lakhs was looted at Borbazar area of Nagaon town today, at around 2.10 pm. The incident happened when this amount was in a bag , carried by Surendra Nath Bora, an engineer of Rupahihat Development Block under Nagaon DRDA. Bora told the media that he put the bag on his car while receiving a call on his mobile. In that fraction of time, someone took away the bag. Bora also told that he brought that amount for the payment from the LGB Bank Borbozar branch. The police has launched search operation to nab the culprit involved with the crime but no one has been arrested so far till filling up the report.

Assamese film 'Aideo' released in DVD

Award winning Assamese film 'Aideo' directed by noted film maker Arup Manna, which got many appreciations after screening at both National and International film festivals was released on Thursday at Nagaon Press Club, Nagaon. The film is now available in DVD which was released by noted actor Gyanada Bora in the presence of distinguished guests. While talking to media, Manna thanked the media for helping in publicity of the film. He also told that he felt very happy when the film was screened twice in Germany. The film has been made on the life of Aideo Handique, the first Assamese female actress.
