Normal life was totally paralysed during the 60-hour 'Dima Hasao bandh' called by North Cachar Hills Indigenous Students' Forum demanding bifurcation of the district, Monday, officials said. The bandh began at 5 AM today and is scheduled to end on May 19.


The protesters blockade train service at Mahur and Lower Haflong railway station. All shops, educational institutions, business establishments and financial institutions remained closed while attendance in government offices was thin.


There was no report of any law and order situation create during the bandh reported from any other parts of the district.


North Cachar Hills Indigenous Students' Forum’s leaders said, bandh has been called to demand the bifurcation of North Cachar Hills district which was recently renamed as Dima Hasao district by Assam State Government, and causing resentment among the non-Dimasas of the district. The bandh has been also supported by North Cachar Hills Indigenous Womens Forum.


More than 70 people killed and hundreds of villages burnt during the clash between Dimasas and zeme nagas in last year in different parts of the district.

4 people killed in landslide in Meghalaya

More than 3 lakh people were affected in the first wave flood in Assam.The flood situation in Assam on Thursday worsened following incessant rains in the state and neighbouring states in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.According to the state government data, more than 3.11 lakh people of 15 districts were affected in the first wave flood in the state.Flood waters of Brahmaputra river and its tributaries had submerged a total of 10,844.37 hectare crop area in Barpeta, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Darrang, Nalbari, Goalpara, jorhat, Kamrup(Metro), Baska, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Nagaon and Bongaigaon district.The flood waters also submerged some areas in Kaziranga National Park (KNP)....

Two MTFA ultra held in Kokrajhar

Security forces on Saturday had apprehended two militants belonging to Muslim Tiger Force of Assam (MTFA) in Assam's Kokrajhar district, officials said.Defence spokesman based in Guwahati said that, based on intelligence input, army and police had jointly launched operation at Chokhilepara area in the BTAD district and nabbed the militant duo.The nabbed militants were identified as Nur Islam and Md. Asarful Islam and recovered two 7.62mm pistols, 17 rounds live ammunition of AK-47, a MTFA identity card and other war like stores in possession from them.

IAF jawan commits suicide

A jawan was committed suicide himself at Air force station in Digaru of Kamrup (Metro) district in Assam on Thursday, officials said.Kundan Singh, a TPL jawan , engaged in the security duty at the air force station had committed suicide himself with his service pistol on Thursday morning.The jawan hailed from Jharkhand and his body was sent for postmortem to hospital.

42 new BOPs in Arunachal & Sikkim: Rijiju

The Union government has sanctioned 42 new Border Outposts (BOPs) of ITBP for Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim to improve security in the border with China, Union MoS for Home Kiren Rijiju said on Wednesday.During a press conference held in Guwahati, the Union minister said that, Centre has already sanctioned 37 BOPs of ITBP for Arunachal Pradesh and five for Sikkim."We are concerned for the security area in the region. Five injured in militant attack in Garo Hills

Two militants of anti-talk faction group of Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KLNLF) were killed in an encounter with the police in Karbi Anglong district, Assam on May 19, officials said. Several arms-ammunitions were seized from the slain militants. Couple killed in lightning

A newly-wed couple was killed in a lightning strike and a body found in Nagaon districton May 16, officials said. Nagaon SP Nitul Gogoi said, the couple died Sunday when lightning struck their home in village Bokulguri under Kampur PS in Nagaon district. The couple was identified as Chaibur Rahman (26) and Chanara Begum (20).
