Abhinav Saikia pledge to make schools bully free

Abhinav Saikia, a tenth grade student at High School North in West Windsor Plainsboro, New Jersey, USA is in India on a mission. During his earlier visits he found that bullying at schools and incidents of cyber bullying were common in India as well. As a middle school student Abhinav was being taught to stand up to bullies and be an “upstander” and not a bystander. He learnt that 90% of bullying incidents stop within 10 seconds if other children intervene.

He wanted to make a difference and spread awareness about the issue and make schools “bully free zones”. He is conducting a series of presentations on “Bullying in Schools” and “Youth Mentoring” at some leading schools in Noida and Guwahati, including a number of schools for under privileged children.

He has got over 400 students to sign his pledge to make schools “bully free zones” and has spread knowledge on simple ways to prevent different forms of bullying like cyber and school bullying. He also presented the benefits of “Youth Mentoring” as an excellent way to connect young people to positive role models and to make them better members in their communities. He has also presented on Drugs and Alcohol among teenagers and about saving the environment and “Saying No to Plastic”.
