The Green Hero of Pobitara, Mukul Tamuli.

A Great sense of ecstasy prevailed inside the Pobitara wild Life sanctuary like never before, as the local villagers and the forest guards came forward beating Drums, and cymbals to welcome ranger Mukul Tamuli to his office after he had received the ND TV’s GREENIES Award. Tamuli had received the “Green Hero” award from the President, Prativa Patil on 7th December in Delhi for his effort to keep Rhino Poachers at bay for last the five years.

Pobitara Wild Life Sanctuary has the highest density of one horn Rhino population, and with more than 20 villages surrounding pobitara, Rhino’s are easily exposed to poachers, and in fact poaching did take place frequent. However in the last five years there has been no poaching and literally not a single Rhino was killed by Poachers. This achievement is not to be taken lightly in the state of affairs of vulnerability of Rhino poaching in the state, where poachers always had the upper hand. The poachers are equipped with sophisticated weapons backed by good network with the locals and at times receiving moral support from a few corrupt forest officials.

The success of an idea doesn’t come overnight, and in case of Pobitara, the forest officials worked united and dedicatedly along with the local villagers and the ex-poachers giving all supports to save the Rhino’s in Pobitara. “I had killed 20 Rhinos in this Pobitara, and if you want to see it I can do it right now, but I will never do it again nor I will allow some one to do this till I am here”, Said Allaludin, who had surrendered some years back and now cooperates with the forest guards. Allaludin had a gang of 20 members and all have surrendered and he wants that poachers should be give life time imprisonment, he regrets that the punishment for poachers is too less and thus they come back again and again.

The award has brought happiness and more life and energy to the people surrounding Pobitara Wild Life Sanctuary, and that was all reflected in the faces of the villagers while welcoming Mukul Tamuli.Though the villagers had no idea about the award but they were all sure that some good thing relating to Pobitara had taken place. The success is all our joint effort, said the Ranger standing on the veranda of his office, who was a bit emotional to see the people and his forest staffs rejoicing his office coming in the late afternoon. He thanked all the forest staffs, the villagers and the ex-poachers and also the NGOs and the higher officers for all the support he had got while on duty.

Pobitara is just 38.81 Sq Km, and with more than 80 Rhino’s it boasts to have the highest density of one horn Rhino in the world followed by Kaziranga. It was declared a reserve Forest in the year 1971 and in 1987 it was declared a Wild Life Sanctuary. As per 2009 census record there are 84 Rhinos; however the number has increased till date with more new borns.

It was in 1985 after...
Cleanliness is next to godliness. There have been a lot of awareness camps, programs and lectures about cleanliness, becoming environment friendly, keeping the city clean.
