The First Garo Food Fest was held at Meghalaya House Lawns, New Delhi on 7th October 2007. A pleasant afternoon saw Sabeena Saighal Saikia, the Editor of Delhi Times inaugurating the occasion.
A pleasant surprise for the gathering was presence of the Chief Minister DD Lapang, Deputy CM and other Ministers of Meghalaya. The visitors to the food festival included of people from the media, government, students, etc., smacking their lips and licking their fingers. Due to unexpected turnout of visitors in huge numbers, the food portion of the festival had to be close earlier as the stock of food ran out. The event continued with the jukebox and various games being organised.
Some items on the menu were Do'o Masala, Wak gominda, Wak baringbelati, Wak meammeseng pura, Wak galda ginchi pura, Do'o kappa, Dobok Bijak, Dobok bandal, Natok sroma, Natok kappa, Bika jo'a, Nakham Chutney, Nakham kappa, Bika kappa, etc. It was quite a spread for those where as yet unfamiliar with the variety of Garo (A'chik) food available in their almost everyday cuisine.
For the Delhi A'chik Youth Association, this is the first step in successfully re-introducing the Garos (A'chiks) and their culture to the National Capital.
The city police has saved the souls of hundreds of people in the city when police defused a powerful bomb beside the bust Machkhowa bust stand on Wednesday afternoon.The bomb was planted beside the Macjkhowa bus stand when the entire area was teeming with hundreds of people. The bomb was spotted by police on patrolling duty at around 3 in the afternoon.Immediately after recovering it, the bomb was taken away to the Brahmaputra beach before being defused by a team of bomb experts.
The government has extended its ceasefire with Dima Halom Daogah for yet another year. The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of DHD representatives led by Dilip Nunisa with Central and state government officials in Delhi on Wednesday.Notably, that the Dimasa outfit, who has been struggling for a separate Dimasaland, signed its ceasefire pact with the Centre on December 26 in 2006. Since then the ceasefire has been getting extension once in a period of 12 months. This is apart from seven rounds of formal talks and over 20 rounds of informal talks with the Centre. But there has been no consensus till now.
Hundreds of passengers at the Rajdhani Express got rid of a major tragedy when a powerful bomb missed the target at Matipul in Karbi Anglong district in the wee hours on Wednesday. According to information, the powerful explosion reportedly took place at Matipul in between Khotkhoti and Bokajan rail stations minutes after the Rajdhani Express bound for Guwahati passed the spot. The target was missed but the railway tracts were left heavily damaged.
Top ranked police and railway officials arrived in the spot. The blast is suspected to be a handiwork of AANLA. Investigation is on.
Noted litterateur and veteran novelist Dr Rita Chaudhury has been named for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award for his outstanding contribution to the field of literature. Dr Chaudhury, who has already authored Abirat Jatra, Mahajibanor Adharsila, Papiya Tarar Sadhu has recently made one more notable contribution by her Deolangkhui, a novel on the social life of the Tiwa people. Bodo writer Bidya Sagar Narzary was also selected for the same award for his work Birgwsrini Thungru.

Recently the news of six communities demanding ST tag in Assam has bemused me. I have some amount of knowledge regarding the ethnic structure and demography of the region. One thing I discovered that student politics is a stumbling block to development in Assam and North East India. Infact, student politics has ruined the north-east and Assam. For the so called 'student' leaders, misleading communities and tribes have become a profession. The only group of people or community of Assam which is free from student based politics are the Kolitas or the Kalitas....

Notorious drug mafia Pakhi Miyan alias Hazi Samsul Haque Talukdar who escapaed from judicial custody is remaining clueless even as police has placed three constables under suspension citing dereliction of duties. According to information, police investigation is still on but there is no report of any breakthrough 24 hours after his escape from the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.Meanwhile, the Assam government has placed three constables namely Amlesh Pandey, Kalyan Gogoi and Pranjit Thakuria,under suspension as they were on duty at the GMCH when the criminal managed to escaped on Monday early in the morning. The CBI tea probing the Assam serial blast visited the blast site at Panbazar on Monday. Led by DIG P Kamraj, the team has been camping in Guwahai to probe the incident that rocked Assam on October 30 where over 90 people lost their limbs. Another team of the agency yesterday visited the blast sites at Kokrajhar, Barpeta Road and Bongaigaon.
