At a time when the world is reeling under the consequences of global warming how can Assam be spared? Global Warming is contributing to the decrease of level of rainfall in Northeast in a big way commented a few leading scientists while speaking to our correspondents. The scientists on conditions of annonymity said that they have been ringing the alarm bells but till date it has fallen in deaf ears and the Goverments of Northeast are yet to take any concrete measures to prevent this. The Northeast is known for its torrential rains where earlier Cherrapunjee, in Meghalaya had the primacy of place as recording the worlds highest rainfall and now this stature has shifted to Mawsynram again in Meghalaya. But sadly this may soon become a thing of the past.It is also felt that deforestation and depletion in the ozone layer due to modernisation and the general attitude towards the environment has also jeopardised the entire eco system. The ruthless felling of trees and man’s encroachment of forest areas has resulted in the depletion of forest cover in the entire region. Trees play a vital role in instigating the clouds to cause rainfall but due to absence of adequate forests weaker monsoon winds are hardly in a position to cause rainfall and this may be the cause of reduced average annual rainfall in the North East. In Assam the state is experiencing a dry spell which in turn is effecting the climatic conditions. The excessive day temperature and of course the frequent power cuts are making people miserable. The ASEB has stated that the rainless condition had lessened the generation capacity of the hydel power stations of the region due to lack of sufficient water in the rivers on which the hydel projects are located. The state has a power demand of around 825 MW during the peak hours and around 550 MW during the off peak hours and problems become unmanageable if rain fall decreases. Agricuture is also getting affected by the decrease in rainfall consequently burning a hole in the state’s economy If such a trend continues than alternative energy sources such as solar energy etc have to be developed. The raingods are unhappy with man’s ravaging nature therefore its time to wake from our slumber and act constructively to appease them. And our Governments need to take the first step.
Assam is set to set yet another record. Come January 6. Altogether 15,000 artistes are going to perform kholat Mejenga Pathar in Titabor with an aim to create a Guinness world record. The venture would help the state spread the culture that was introduced by Vaishnavite siant Srimanta Sankardeva. The event is being organized under the aegis of Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha Titabor Committee.The mega event is being held to showcase the Assamese khol for the global community to admire. Despite watertight security, a low intensity blast exploded near Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s official residence in Koinadhara leaving a teenager boy injured on Saturday.He sustained injury when a detonator he carried home exploded near Gogoi's official residence at Koinadhora. Identified as Sanjib Das, the boy found the detonator attached to a wire at a stone quarry on the Assam-Meghalaya border and was carrying it home at Uday Nagar and it exploded in the high security area.According to police, the teenager suffered minor injuries in the explosion which was a small one and caused no damage. He said that Das was administered first aid at a hospital and released.
Normal life came to a grinding halt in four districts following the 24-hour bandh call by the All Tiwa Students Union which ended on Saturday evening. The bandh call was given to demand immediate election in six Tiwa Autonomous Council constituencies in Kamrup (Metro) district. The impact of the bandh call was total in Morigaon district only. Police arrested a Guwahati based journalist for allegedly collecting lakhs of rupees from various people on the pretext of providing them jobs in public sector undertaking Oil India Ltd.Monikuntol Saikia was arrested yesterday based on a FIR filed by a person. The complainant had filed the FIR alleging that Saikia had taken money from him and promised to facilitate a job in exchange.Saikia is also alleged to have duped several other people with false promises of providing jobs.

Tension prevails in Tinsukia a day after the owner of a tea estate and his wife were charred to death by a mob of angry workers. The incident took place at the Borduma Tea Estate when the estate owner Mridul Kumar Bhattacharjee and his wife Rita Bhattacharjee were burnt alive in the evening. A local trader sustained serious injury at a shoot out in Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district on Wednesday.The incident took place at night when unidentified gunmen fired upon the trader at his residence before disappearing in dense darkness. Identified as Bikash Sarkar, the injured businessman was rushed to the hospital. Police officials rushed to the spot but no one has so far been arrested.
