Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.
The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world.
She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.
Dr Goswami received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, the Jnanpith Award in 2000 and is the country’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate in 2008.
A few years back, she played the role of a peace negotiator in the ULFA-government peace talk. Later, ULFA elected her as the PCG member. Thousands of her fans rushed to the GMCH as soon as the sad news was spearing like wildfire.

A great loss to the literery world and a huge setback to the assamese culture. November 2011 has taken away from us two most distinguished and illustrious persons. It is almost impossible to fill up the void created on account of the sad demise of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May the almighty God grant eternal peace to the departed souls.

The name of the media fellows, selected for the fellowship programme to study the issues of climate change and disaster risk reduction has been declared. Sponsored by ActionAid (Northeast) and conducted by Guwahati Press Club the fellowships have been awarded to Manoranjan Bori (Dainik Janambhumi), Sudip Sharma (Sangbad Lahari) and Kanta Kaveri Sonowal (The Sentinel).
The fellows will receive a grant of Rs 10,000/- for the month long feloooship program, under which they will study and report about the impact of climate change in Northeast India and also probable ways for disaster risk reduction in the region.

A hardecore NSCN cadre died and three others have been arrested during a joint operation by police and army in Haflong on Friday. According to information, acting a tip off that a small group of militants are hiding in Lungsingram area, police and army launched a combing operation in the area where the encounter took place in the hills district town.

Movement of vehicles is set to remain disrupted as the functioning in petrol depots have ben thrown out of gear following the 72 hour long strike of the Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union. According to the Union leaders, the strike began at 5 in the morning on Tuesday which will end at 5 in the morning on Thursday.
