Speedy truck kills one at Nazira

One Rehim Ali of Meckeypur killed by a speedy truck (AS-04-AC-2726) on Tuesday at around 6 pm near Nazira Charial. The truck was on its way from Nazira to Joysagar through Bor-Ali. After the accident the situation became tense and the agitated mob torched the vehicle at Na-Mati. Officials of Nazira Sub-Division reached the spot and controlled the situation.

Barhoongkha beat Jharkhand

Barhoongkha AC, Kokrajhar defeated SE Railway, Jharkhand 3-0 in the Daoharu Mungkhlong football trophy being played at Dotma HS school ground in Kokrajhar district today. 

Ajit Karjee of Barhoongkha netted his goal against Jharkhand in 27 minutes of first half and led the match 1-0. Dhrubojyoti Brahma of Barhoongkha scored two goals in 72 minutes and 77 minutes against Jharkhand and won the match 3-0. ASEB, Guwahati will take on Salbagan FC, Gossage on tomorrow.


BJP leader quits

Former president of Kokrajhar district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party, Binati Bala Basumatary resigned from her party membership on Monday. 

Basumatary submitted her resignation letter to the state party president citating personal reason . She was Kokrajhar district BJP president for 2011-2015, who had gained strength of the party through her strong leadership in the district. Basumatary's quit of the party ahead assembly election would draw a set back party strength in the Kokrajhar.

Basumatary is likely to join ruling BPF party within couple of days, said a close aid of Binati. 

Regional Consultation on Land and Property Rights

For the first time ever , people from all walks of life from across the North East region are coming together to demand what rightfully belongs to women-as well as men- societal recognition of access and control over Land and Property by women. A group of activists, academicians, members of the State Women's Commissions from various states of NE, NGO representatives, leaders of customary bodies, students and citizens will deliberate upon the changes needed to ensure women's right over land and property at a two day Regional Consultation on Land and Property Rights of Women in the Northeast being jointly organized by Indo-Global Social Service Society (IGSSS), Actionaid, and Churches Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) on 13th and 14th of March 2008 at the Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

This Consultation is part of the National Level Campaign for Women's Right to land and Property. In the Northeast , the campaign began with state level consultations in the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram , Tripura and Nagaland in February. The key issues that emerged form these consultations centered around changes required in the Customary Laws, State Laws and Special Provisions of the Constitution such as the 6th schedule and the BTC act, impact of the Look East Policy and Violence Against Women (VAW) in the context of land and property rights. These issues will be discussed at the two day regional consultation and a plan of action to take this campaign forward.
