Sngi Lum Lang - Jaintia festival celebrated

The ‘SNGI LUM LANG’ festival of Jaintias residing in Dima Hasao District of Assam is celebrated at Jatinga Village on January 7th with traditional fervor and gaiety.


This ‘SNGI LUM LANG’ is celebrated here at Jatinga with the aim of revival of culture, customs and culture of the Jaintias after a long gap of seven decades as this had been celebrated till 1936 since they embraced the Christianity and some opined that celebration of such festival was wastage of time. In 1999, Late H. Rupsi had held a meeting of all the Jaintia Gaon Buras of Dima Hasao to discuss on the celebration of this festival but it was not materialized at that time but with the active initiative of Sri Debojit Thaosen, Chief Executive Member, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council and Executive Member Moril Masa and others this has come to an effect this year.


The Chief Executive Member, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council Sri Debojit Thaosen graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while the Chief Executive Member, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council Sri L. Sumer attended as the guest of honour. They were felicitated with jaintia traditional scurf and bouquet of flowers.


The Chief Guest Sri Debojit Thaosen hoisted the flag in presence of huge gatherings.


This was followed by welcome song, traditional dances by small children and the youths; this was followed by traditional games and sports which included archery.



Sri L. Sumer, Chief Executive Member, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council expressed his satisfaction over the positive attitude of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC) towards the minority community living in the district by declaring holiday on the occasion of ‘SNGI LUM LANG’. While offering his heartfelt thanks Sri L. Sumer congratulated Debojit Thaosen the Chief Executive Member, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council.


Earlier, Flemimg Rupsi Gaon Bura, Jatinga village explained the significance of the festival. Rupsi further said aim of this festival was to reatain their culture, custom and tradition.


Sri Debojit Thaosen, CEM, DHAC in his speech stressed on preservation of culture, custom and tradition while appealing the people of Jatinga to save the birds during the birds phenomenon at Jatinga.

Protest rally at Haflong

In protest against the continuous bandh, inhuman activities during bandh in Dima Hasao the citizens of greater Haflong organized a protest rally at Haflong on Friday at 10 am. Assam Rifles avert security breach

The Assam Rifles troops averted a major security breach when they recovered and defused a grenade in Haflong town on Friday morning stated AR press release. Troops of Haflong based Assam Rifles unit were on routine area domination patrol when at approx 6 am they found a live hand grenade on the road side near Synod point. The grenade could have caused serious injuries to innocent commuters including women & children including loss of lives. The continued vigilance by the Assam Rifles has saved the people from a potentially dangerous situation which could have used by rival groups to cause further trouble during these tense times.

ASDC appeals for peace

Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) Dima Hasao District Committee appealed to the people of Dima Hasao district irrespective of caste, creed, religion and ethnicity for maintaining peace, brotherhood and harmony in the said hill district, stated a press release issued by Publicity Secretary, ASDC Dima Hasao District Committee, Nigendra Naiding ASDC urged the Central Govt and State Govt to take more effective steps in the affairs of law and order situation of the district, so that such violence would not recur in any parts of the hill district.

One died in Bomb blast at Umrangsu

One unidentified man died in a powerful bomb explosion at Umrangso in Dima Hasao on Monday night at about 12.20 am at a place 50 metres away from Umrangso market creating panic among the people of Umrangsu.
