Quiz, exhibition, plantation on June 5

In commemoration with the World Environment Day, the People's Friend Foundation, in association with Pollution Control Board and Arena Animation, Panbazar, is organizing Second Prize money ‘ENVIRO-QUIZ-2013’, among high and higher secondary school students of the state on 5th of June at the District Library Auditorium, Guwahati and All Assam Environment Photography Exhibition and Competition, titled 'NATURE THROUGH THE LENS-2013' at State Art Gallery from  July 8-12.

The Quiz will be on Environment and nature, Bio-Diversity, Ecology, Zoology, Botany, and other related subjects and the medium of it will be in English and Assamese. The competition will be on two categories: Group A: Class V to Class VII and Group B: Class VIII to Class XII. Maximum of three teams from the same school in each category will be allowed to participate. Each team will consist of two students. Joining fee for each team is Rs 100.

The Chief Quiz Master will be Professor Dilip Kumar Baruah, Reputed Quiz Master and Former Professor of Cotton College. There will be cash prizes and other attractive gifts and certificates for the Final Winner teams and rest two teams in each category.

The Photography competition is open to any participant from any age group from the state of Assam. The theme of photographs should be Nature, wildlife, environment, bio-diversity etc. A participant can contribute a maximum of two photographs for the Competition. All photographs must have the minimum size of A4 and maximum size of A3, and be printed in good quality Photo Paper. The participant must submit a CD with the original file of the photographs.

A total of 100 Photographs will be selected for final Exhibition Cum Competition after Screening by the Judges. A total of five photographs out of the 100 will be selected for attractive prizes. Joining Fee for the competition is Rupees One hundred only (Rs. 100/-). The Participants can deposit their joining fee in cash or in the form of a Demand Draft or Cheque in Favour of People’s Friend Foundation, Guwahati to Chairman, People's Friend Foundation, C/O. Meanwhile, People's Friend Foundation, in association with Canon India Pvt Ltd is also organising a Plantation Drive in Guwahati. The planation will start at 8 am on June 5 at the Handique Girls' College Hostel at Dighalipukhuri followed by the District Library, Guwahati, and the Asom Sahitya Sabha campus. Interested citizens can come to the above mentioned venues and join in the plantation drive. People can collect saplings from the organisers to plant in their own homes/lands also.

Another electrocution death

One after another tragic incidents seem to have shocked Guwahati during the last 24 hours after the city was caught in massive water logging.

Yet another person was electrocuted to death in the city giving rise to the toll in the flood-hit city.

The incident took place at Narengi near the LG towar where Mustak King Khan, a daily wage earner from Bihar died on the spot. The incident took place 24 hours after 5 persons died of electrocution in the city.

The city was caught in the massive waterlogging, electrocution and landslides that claimed 11 lives on during the last 24 hours.

Waters in Lachit Nagar, Bhangagarh, Rupnagar areas are receding rapidly. But Anil Nagar, Chandmari, Nabin Nagar are still reeling under rain waters.

The situation could turn worse if rain revisits with the next 24 hours. There is report of marginal let –up in the situation in Dispur where rainwaters wreaked havoc at the MLA hostel.

Barhoongka beat Dihung at Kagrabari

Barhoongka AC from Kokrajhar beat Dihung SC from Kagrabari 1-0 in Tuesday's match of Tikendra Brahma and Aolang Brahma memorial football trophy at Kagrabari ground in Kokrajhar. Both team remained goal less in the first half. Pangjaphu Kwi of Barhoongka scored lone goal against Dihung in 69 minutes of second half and led the team to win 1-0. Jothai SC from Gendrabil will take on Global FC from Gossaigaon on October 22.

 

Assam Farmers Felicitated By GOI

Three farmers and one farmers’ organization of Assam has felicitated by the Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, Government of India on 26th February last at Vigyan Bhaban, New Delhi for their excellent contribution towards agriculture, informs Mowsam Hazarika, ADO((information), Directorate of Horticulture & Food Processing, Assam. The name of the farmers’ are- Abdul Halim, Goalpara; Montaz Ali, Bongaigaon and Mohammed Abdul Khalek, Nagaon. The name of the farmers’ organization is ‘Mainao Agro Multipurpose Self Help Group, Kokrajhar’.


Sharad Pawar, Minister of Agriculture, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution present in the occasion and paid tribute to the enduring spirit of Indian Farmer. Total hundred and one farmers from all over the country were felicitated in the occasion. In this context, a coffee table book, namely, ‘Harvest of Hope’, published by the Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, Government of India also released in the programme. The success story of all the hundred and one farmers included in this pictorial book. Sharad Pawar, Minister of Agriculture, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India ceremonially given the Felicitation Memento and the coffee table book to all the hundred and one farmers. Mohammed Abdul Khalek, Nagaon could not attend the programme, due to some personal problem. On return from New Delhi , Abdul Halim, Goalpara and Montaz Ali, Bongaigaon said that adoption of the guidance given by the officials of state agriculture department is main factor behind their success. Recently they are very much benefited by adopting system of rice intensification in their field, they revealed.
