Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. GUWAHATI:The Gauhati High Court on Wednesday reserved its ruling on Akhil Gogoi's bail petition. The ruling is expected at 10.30 in the morning on Thursday. In yet another development Dudhnoi police on Wednesday moved Dibrugarh Chief Judicial Magistrate seeking the KMSS leader in their custody in connection with a case pending against him. Even if the High Court grants bail for Gogoi who was arrested under NSA, the KMSS adviser is unlikely to come under the open sky on Thursday.
MARGHERITA: Tinsukia AJYCP leaders and workers slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday alleging his government's attempt to protect the Hindu Bangladeshi immigrants in Assam. Staging a token gherao in the town, the workers of the organization warned of a massive agitation if the NDA government at the Centre comes out to the rescue of the Hindu immigrants amid the ongoing process to update NRC across the state.
MARGHERITA:Speeding car crushed to death a full grown leopard in Margherita seeing huge shock among the animal lovers on Wednesday. The incident took place at Pawoi area in East Margherita when a speed car knocked down the animal as it crossed the road early in the morning. Local animal lovers and forest officials later attended the funeral of the 60kg weight animal.
GUWAHATI:Eminent engineer and social activist Mukul Mahanta passed away at his Guwahati residence on Wednesday. Mahanta was 80 who suddenly died in the wee hours. Mahanta, an engineer by profession was known for his innovation outside the nation. He was one of the members in the Peoples' Consultative Group set up by ULFA to broker peace with the government. Many organizations and individuals have deeply condoled his death and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
GOLAGHAT:Normal life remains paralyzed in Golaghat in view of the 12 hour district bandh on Wednesday in protest against the police excess on a group of protestors in the town on Tuesday. Roads in the upper Assam district remained deserted from 6 in the morning as six organizations have enforced the bandh call. Shops and markers, schools and colleges, offices and banks have refused to open under the impact of the bandh call. GUWAHATI:The Gauhati High Court is deciding the fate of Akhil Gogoi on Wednesday when it would be clearing its ruling on the KMSS leader's bail petition. The court heard the petition moved on behalf of Gogoi whom police arrested three months back under NSA. Dibrugarh police arrested him a couple of days after he openly urged the people to remain prepared for an armed struggle. His arrest evoked sharp reaction and countrywide agitation.
GUWAHATI:The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a central school principal on bribery charge in Guwahati on Tuesday. A team of the country's premier investigation agency caught Khanapara Kendriya Vidyalaya principal Rajesh Dhawan as he took bribe from a contractor. The complaint was under investigation and a CBI team laid a trap on Tuesday to substantiate the allegation and then he was arrested.

MARGHERITA: An uneasy situation prevails in the Margherita-based Coal India employees colony following an alleged flash trade by a youth who is known for his close association with MLA Bhaskar Sarma. He is none other than Pranab Hatibaruh who is alleged to have been running flash trade in NEC employees quarters in Colliory near Borgolai. Local residents here alleged that the quarter owned by Hatibarah keeps teeming with men and women whose integrity is doubtful. The women here have demanded action against the youth. KOKRAJHAR: Thousands of passengers bore the brunt of the rail blockade by ANCC in Kokrajhar as they demanded ST status, land pattas and talks with the rebel outfits on Wednesday morning. 'We are waiting at Kokrajhar station for train since early morning because all trains are not coimng due to blockade', said a train passenger. A Rajdhani express passenger said, “My family was bound for New Delhi,but found rail blockade along the Kokrajhar railway station.
