JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Assam elephant dead in B’desh

A full grown elephant from Assam died in Bangladesh on Tuesday a couple of days after it reached the neighbouring country by travelling on the river Brahmaputra. The elephant was learnt to have passed away early in the morning making futile all efforts to save the animal which slipped into the mighty river two months back. According to the experts, the animal was took weak after it was repeatedly tranquilized and therefore, the treatment did not work. The incident took place when a team of forest officials was on its way to visit Bangladesh to take the elephant in their possession.

ULFA-I claims I-Day bombing responsibility

The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I) on Tuesday owned up the responsibility of the serial explosions when the state joined the country wide Independence Day on Monday. In a statement, ULFA-I publicity secretary Aronodoy Asom said that they ensured that not even a single indigenous person was killed or injured in the explosions. He said that the armed protest was never aimed at terrorizing the indigenous lot. According to him, the celebration was imposed in Assam. As many as six explosions rocked Tinsukia and Charaido districts on Monday when Independence day celebration was going on.

I-Day celebrated at Guwahati Press Club

Silent Sonowal irks AJYCP

AJYCP has strongly lashed out at Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday alleging his stoic silence in his Independence Day speech on the main issues confronting the state for decades. In a statement issued here on Monday, AJYCP president Biraj Kumar Talukdar said the main issues have eluded in his speech. Serial blasts rock Tinsukia

Despite tight security arrangement suspected ULFA(I) rebels exploded a series of blasts in Tinsukia district on Monday to make its strength felt. The first explosion took place at the Indira Gandhi School at Laipuli at around 7 in the morning where there was no report of any casualty. The second one bomb went off at Line No 6 of Badlabhata Tea Estate in Doomdooma. This was followed by the third one explosion at Masuwa. Defying ULFA diktat, national flag kept fluttering in the sky of Assam as the state along with other parts of the country celebrated the 70th Independence Day on Monday. AJYCP questions attack on common people

Amid a terror shadow in the run up to the Independence Day celebrations, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has condemned the incident of gory attack on the common people in Tinsukia district on Friday.
