JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Declare flood & erosion national calamity

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has demanded an urgent measure by the Centre to declare Assam flood and erosion as a national calamity. Woes of waters for wild animals

Flood waters have been wreaking no less havoc for the birds and animals in national parks and sanctuaries. Rhinos along with wild animals have shifted to the near by hill in the Kaziranga National Park which is completely submerged. Many deer are believed to have been washed away. Rajnath coming on Saturday

Union home minister Rajnath Singh will be on a day long visit to Assam to take stock of the situation where 27 people lost their lives till Friday. The Union minister is expected to arrive in Guwahati at 10 in the morning and would make an aerial survey in some flood–hit districts. Before leaving back to New Delhi, Singh will talks with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to assess the situation. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries have been flowing dangerously where more and more areas have come under the surging waters in 22 districts affecting 20 lakh people so far.

Guwahati under threat!

The rising water level of the Brahmaputra threatens to wash away the landmark areas in Guwahati very soon. The mighty river has been dangerously flowing following the incessant rains in the catchment areas in Arunachal Pradesh. If the water level refuses to recede, Kamrup DC office, CJM Court, GMC office might come under the surging waters along with some parts of Fancybazar area by Thursday. Visit flood-hit areas: CM to MLAs

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has asked all MLAs in the flood-hit areas to apprise him of the situation as soon as possible. Talking to reporters in Dispur on Wednesday, Sonowal announces Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the flood victims. “We don’t have any fund crunch in the time of flood. Moreover, the Centre has assured us of all assistance,” said Sonowal. He further warned strict action against the erring officials deployed in the flood hit areas. Budget session adjourned till August 7

A devastating flood wave in Assam has forced the Assam assembly to suspend the budget session till August 8. The Business advisory committee of the House took the unanimous decision in view of the flood situation where 13 people died and nearly 20 lakh people have been affected. The MLAs, mostly, have left for their own home constituency to visit the flood-hit areas. They would also review the relief and rescue operation in the affected areas.

Beware of religious tension: ULFA(I)

The United Liberation Front of Asom (I) has warned of an outbreak of religious tension in Assam in near future. In a statement issued to media on Wednesday, the chief of the proscribed outfit Abhijit Asom said that the Muslim people in Assam should try to have a look at the holy scripture from a scientific point of view to keep the diabolic jihadi tentacles at bay. He further deplored that Kashmir has turned into a valley of death where the sons of the soil have been killed.
