JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Heavy downpour havoc in Guwahati

A record rainfall in Guwahati wrecked no less havoc in the premier north eastern city heavily disrupting Eid celebration by the Muslim people on Thursday. No let-up in flood fury

There seems to be no let-up in the overall flood scene in Assam on Wednesday with incessant rains in many parts of the state along with the catchment areas in Arunachal Pradesh. The mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries have been flowing abode the danger level suggesting a grim scene during the next couple of days. The current flood waters have inundated the Kaziranga National Park forcing many birds and animals to move to the nearby Karbi hills area. The Pobitora sanctuary is still reeling water flood waters. Gohain gets railway

Rajen Gohain has been given railway ministry hours after the Nagaon MP took oath as minister of state on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi allocated the portfolio to the senior BJP leader fetching a ray of hope for the north eastern region. Many parties and organizations in the North East have welcomed Gohain saying that he would try his best to enhance railway connectivity in the entire region. Gohain is the second MP from Nagaon district of Assam to have taken oath as Union minister. Muhiram Saikia was first to have taken oath as Union minister of state for human resource development in the HD Deve Gowda and IK Gujral governments.

Eye check-up camp concludes at press club

Most of the media persons based in the city are facing different eye problems like redness, dryness and regular watering, which came to light in a daylong check-up camp held at Guwahati Press Club on Tuesday (5 July 2016). Organized by the ASG Eye Care the free eye check-up camp was attended by over 70 media persons along with their close relatives. Stop oilfield auction: AJYCP

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad continues its protest for the second consecutive day on Tuesday against the move to auction 12 oilfields in Assam. AJYCP activists in different parts of the state blocked the National Highways from 11 in the morning disrupting surface transport communication for at least three hours. Pobitora under surging waters

The overall flood scene in Assam refuses to improve on Tuesday with incessant rains that lashed the state for the last couple of days. Part of the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Morigaon has come under the surging waters forcing many birds and animals to shift their places. More than 1.5 lakh people have been reeling under the current flood wave in Morigaon, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts where relief and rescue operations are in progress. The situation threatens to take more grim turn if the rains refuse to relent.

Gohain takes oath as Union minister

Rajen Gohain took oath as Union minister when Prime Minister Narendra Modi expanded his council of ministers inducting the Nagaon MP along with 18 others on Tuesday. President Pranab Mukherjee administered the senior BJP leader from Assam the oath of office and secrecy at a function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in the morning in presence of Modi along with his ministerial colleagues. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal along with a few top state BJP leaders were present in the function. Gohain, the three fourth time MP from Nagaon got the invitation to take oath two days ago when he was in his home district.

Senior BJP leader Rajen Gohain is likely to be inducted in the Union council of ministers slated to be reshuffled on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is believed to have shortlisted the Nagaon MP out of a panel of 4 names from the state. “It is the Prime Minister’s prerogative and we don’t have any idea,” said a top BJP leader in Delhi.
