JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

A modest earthquake measuring around 7 magnitudes in Richter scale was experienced in eastern India on Wednesday (13 April 2016) evening. An audio compact disc titled as Sangbadik (journalist) was released on 12 April 2016 at Guwahati Press Club. The CD comprises a chorus narrating the glory of journalism, which is penned by Assam’s senior administrative officer Pawan Kumar Barthakur. It has music by Tapan Kakoti where PK Barthakur, Parashmani, Bidyut Bikash, Shahrukh Ahmed, Beby Kuin, Kankana Das, Sumi Kakoti lent their voices. In a poll related incident at Safakamar  LP School (no. 94 polling station), Sarbhog, one old man named Abdul Rashid (80) died  and three others injured including two CRPF jawans. The incident happened after a clash between the voters and CRPF jawans in front of Safakamar LP School. Police laathicharged the gathering crowd in which the old man got hurt and died at Barpeta Medical college. On the other hand the enraged mob pelted stones at the CRPF troupe and resulting injury of two jawans. Polling had to stop for some time during the incident. Barpeta Deputy Commissioner Ashwini Kumar rushed to the spot and ordered a magisterial enquiry.
In Sarbhog, Barpeta, Jania, Baghbar, Sarukshetry and Chenga LACs witnessed 78.92% poll turn out till  5 pm on Monday. Polll turn out  in Sarbhog (40) 76%, Barpeta (43)  79%, Jania (44) 80.5%, Baghbar (45) 79%, Sarukshetry (46) 78% and in Chenga (47)  81% LACs. In Bajali subdivision in Bhawanipur LAC poll turn out was 82%, and Patacharkuchi 79%.  The Vidyapith HS school  polling station was setup as Model Polling Station run by women staff.
A seminal cum workshop on mushroom cultivation is being organsied on April 19-21 at Cotton College Bio-Tech Department, Panbazar, Guwahati. Barpeta is ready for the Assam Legislative Assembly Election 2016.  Presiding  officers,  polling officers  has set out for 1037 polling stations for Monday's poll. 5322 polling officials are engaged in  1164 polling stations for the 6 LACs of Barpeta election district. The district administration has managed 326 Bullock carts, 264 push carts, 576 porters, 104 machine  boat, 64 buses , 164 wingers, and 224 small vehicles for the communication of the polling officers.

The city based Dispur Hospitals today organized a free diabetes screening and a Hepatitis-B vaccination camp to observe the World Health Day at Guwahati Press Club. Nearly hundred media persons participated in the program where over 50 scribes took the first dose of Hepatitis-B vaccine (in addition to 15 second dose recipients).
