JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Terror shadow falls again on the peace loving people atop the hills district.Dima Hasao police claimed to have killed three insurgents at an encounter on Thursday. The encounter took place at Karachand area in Basabari in the wee hours where DHD(A) dreaded leaders Nigu Fonglu, Sibu Kamprai were killed on the spot. The third insurgent was from KPLT who also killed in the encounter.  Police further seized arms and ammunition from the spot.        
A premier investigation agency meant to probe the region of terror on Thursday announced an astronomical amount of money for tips on the whereabouts of two top NSCN-K leaders—the blatant bran behind a gory attack on army in Manipur three months back. The investigation agency promised Rs 7 lakh reward for the inputs on the whereabouts of SS Khaplang, the military head of the Naga insurgent outfit. The next dreaded insurgent is Nikki Sumi, the ferocious Naga terrorist who launched the deadly attack on the Dogra regiment leaving 18 jawans dead.  
Boko police have not been able to arrest Gopinath Das even a week after they have registered a rape case against the Boko MLA.A police team probing the minor rape case has been seeking the AIUDF MLA from Wednesday morning in different places. But the MLA in on the run. According to allegation, Das raped his minor domestic help inside his car recently. Initially, police kept the complaint pending at the Mondira outpost. But under mounting pressure later the FIR was transferred to Boko police station. Despite repeated contact police have not been able to trace out Das.  
Siang district is bracing up for a major power cuts if the NEEPCO project is allowed to stop functioning within the next 15 days.In a letter on Monday addressed to the NEEPCO project manager posted in the 3750 MW Siang Upper Stage-II HEP, the Siang Indigenous Farmer’s Forum (SIFF) has asked the authority to close down the office located in Upper Siang District within 15 days.The organization further threatened to take massive agitation if the office refuses to stop functioning.
Amid an aroused brouhaha over the government’s move to hand over 69 oil wells to private companies in Assam, a section of economists have thrown their weights behind the decision. Talking to Assam Times noted economics Gautom Prasad Baroowah said,” to extract crude for marginal field well is expensive. The government would spend huge money from tax payers fund. The rate of return could be minimal.” According to Baruah, “instead of incurring huge expenses government can allocate these source of marginal crude well to private party and earn huge money and reinvest it for development of new fields and earn better profit.”Baroowah observed that vigilance is the price of liberty. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma pins hopes on fresh mandate as BJP candidate from Jalukbari. But there is a chance for by poll in Jalukbari. Talking to Assam Times, constitutional expert Dr CJS Das said any bye poll just one year before the assembly does not make sense. “Assam has only 6 or 7 months to go to the assembly polls---less than a year. Hence, bye poll is not required,” said Dr Das. He said same policy is applicable if other dissident MLAs who are preparing to join BJP. Notably, Dr Sarma is preparing to resign as MLA to be elected with fresh mandate from Jalukbari. But he has been keeping it pending time and again.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi reviewed the state’s law and order situation at a meeting of top ranked police officials on Wednesday.Attended by DGP Khagen Sarma the meeting further discussed the allegations of rape against AIUDF MLA Gopinath Das.    
Amid a bitter blame game between Sarbananda Sonowal and Tarun Gogoi over the flood assistance, the Centre on Wednesday released Rs 193 crore to Dispur.The Chief Minister’s Office told Assam Times that Union home minister Rajnath Singh informed it to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi over telephone in the evening.The Centre released the amount hours after Gogoi strongly took on the Centre for not releasing the flood assistance to Dispur.    
Police men probing the rape charges against Gopinath Das have been searching the AIUDF MLA which is still on the run.A team of senior police officials simultaneously raided his residences in Lalganesh area and MLA hostel to be questioned in connection with the rape charge brought against him by his minor domestic help.But he was not found available. He is believed to have been hiding at an undisclosed location after police formally registered the case against him.
