JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Yet another suicide incident shocks the Guwahati IIT. A B Tech student of the institute committed suicide on Sunday. According to information, identified as Tushar Yadav, the student from Gurgon in Haryana committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of his hostel. The incident took place at 8 in the morning where Yadav was believed to have jumped from Kameng Hostel. He was taken to the hospital where he was declared brought dead. The Assam government has removed Sadananda Gogoi from the state publication Board a day after CBI arrested the top official in connection with Saradha scam.According to sources, the education minister further has dissolved the core committee of the Board where Gogoi was holding the post of convener.The popular singer was appointed the Board Secretary when Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma was holding the portfolio of education department.  

Trader killed in Dalgaon blast

A businessman was killed and another sustained injury when suspected NDFB-S militants exploded a powerful grenade in Dalgaon on Saturday night. The incident took place near the office of the Bargang Tea Estate when two motorcycle born militants lobbed the grenade at the tea garden office. Businessman Kavil Chand Jain was killed on the spot while Ramakanta Tiwari who is a staffer at the tea garden sustained serious injury. Security forces arrived in the spot and cordoned off the area to nab the militants. But they managed to escape. The injured Tiwari is battling for life at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. Sadananda in 5 days CBI custody

The Central Bureau of Investigation probing the Saradha scam got Sadananda Gogoi in five days custody a day after the investigation agency arrested him in connection with the multi crore scam.CBI’s special Crime branch got five days custody when the popular singer and film maker was produced before the Alipore court in the afternoon.The judge granted the remand to the investigation agency till September 17.Gogoi was arrested at the Kolkata office after five hours of interrogation for his alleged role in the link between Saradha chief Sudipto Sen and a circle of ministers, MLAs and businessmen. 

Polling ends peacefully in Lakhipur

Amid mammoth security arrangement, polling in Jamunamukh is over as soon as the clock struck at 5 in the afternoon with a huge turn out.The polling was by and large peaceful where no major incident or anomalies were reported. From early in the morning voters waited in huge queues to exercise their franchise in the by poll which began at 7 in the morning.The counting will took place at 8 in the morning on Tuesday along with Silchar and Jamunamukh.The ruling Congress has fielded Goala's son Rajdeep while Sanjay Kumar Thakur is the BJP nominee. Mukesh Pandey is the AIUDF candidate. The by election was required following the death of Dinesh Prasad Goala in April this year.

Voting concludes; eyes fixed on Sep 16

Amid tight security, polling passed off peacefully in Jamunamukh where 165,718 voters have sealed the fate of five candidates in the electronic voting machines on Saturday.The polling percentage is a huge 70. But the poll panel has yet to officially announce the turn out. There is no report of any untoward incident during this period.AIUDF has fielded Abdur Rahim Ajmal, son of AIUDF chief Badaruddin Ajmal.Congress has put up Bashiruddin Laskar while the BJP has nominated Bilal Uddin for the by-polls.

Silchar polling ends; counting on Tuesday

Polling is over in Silchar. The fate of 12 bypoll candidates has been sealed in the electronic voting machines. According to initial report, the voting percentage was 76 till 5 in the afternoon.The election commission confirmed that the polling was by and large peaceful. There is no report of any major anomalies and untoward incident during this period.The constituency has 206,573 voters who have decided on the fate of 12 candidates. The contest is straight between BJP's Dilip Paul and the Congress's Arun Dutta Mazumder.The bye-election was necessitated following the election of Silchar Congress MLA Sushmita Dev. The counting will take place from 8 in the morning on Tuesday./
