JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

M Thousan, HAFLONG: The indefinite strike of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council employees demanding payment entered second day on Thursday. But there seems to be no immediate solution in sight.Talking to reporters in Haflong, the agitating employees said that they won’t call off the stir unless they receive their salaries. As many as 85 people hailing from Assam had a narrow escape when they were rescued from the devastating flood waves in Jammu and Kashmir.These include the families of teachers at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology in Srinagar. According to information, over 200 people from are still trapped in the flood.These people are basically teachers, CRPF personnel, CISF jawans and civilians. More information is expected to pour in during the next 24 hours after the restoration of the communication network. The rescued people are expected to reach Guwahati by Friday.

The Assam government has extended Rs 5 crore to Jammu and Kashmir to help the state tide over the floodwaves that killed over 150 people during the last ten days.Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday directed the finance department to ensure the assistance at an earlier date in the name of the flood marooned state on Wednesday.Apart from it, the state has sent a rescue team to Srinagar led by an additional director general of police.   
State BJP on Wednesday demanded Centre’s intervention to solve the flood problems alleging Dispur’s failure to deal with the perennial problem. Talking to reporters during his visit to Morigaon, party president Siddharth Bhattacharjee alleged that all flood and erosion protection schemes had failed to protect people in the state from the perennial deluge. He demanded that the Central Water Resource Department chalk out new schemes to permanently solve the flood and erosion problem of the state. He accused the state government of indulging in gross corruption in implementing flood control schemes and demanded direct intervention of the Centre to tackle the problem.
Jammu police continue to grill the person from Assam a day after he was arrested in Samba with a US-made revolver along with fake currency. Identified as Innas Ali from Hojal, he was caught during a raid at the Shivam Guest House on the Jammu-Pathankote National Highway at Samba Chowk. His associate Raju Dass managed to escape.
Dispur has alleged a conspiracy by Arunachal Pradesh to construct a hydro-power projects upstream of the Brahmaputra water system. Power minister Pradyut Bordoloi has appraised the Centre of the entire conspiracy alleging that the Assam government is not allowed to know. In his address at the power ministers’ conference in New Delhi on Tuesday, Bordoloi said that pacts have been signed for power projects in Arunachal Pradesh. But the process is not in the knowledge of the Assam government.
