JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Karimganj incident takes new turn

Medical reports of the two school girls in Karimganj district who were found hanging from a tree recently refused any rape incident. The post mortem conducted at the Silchar Medical College has confirmed that the duo had committed suicide. Sources told Assam Times that the report received on Saturday night has clearly said that the girls had died of asphyxia as a result of suicidal hanging. The report has clear mention that there was no evidence or sign of any sexual assault or intercourse. The family members have not lodged any complaint on the incident after a section of the villagers found the bodies hanging on a tree with the two ends of a same rope at a dense forest...

AGP strike on Sept 11

Asom Gana Parishad leaders and workers will stage hunger strike on September 11 to mount pressure on Delhi and Dispur to implement the Assam Accord. Party leaders told Assam Times that the hunger 8 hours strike will begin at 8 in the morning in all district and sub divisional headquarters. The party has alleged that the Modi government who promised to detect and deport the immigrants after May 26, of late, has maintained studied silence on the issue. Interstate border dispute, and price rise are the vital issues to be raised in the strike.

Srivastava quits as adviser

GM Srivastava has tendered his resignation as the chief minister’s security adviser. The former DGP put in his papers on Saturday to be accepted by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Force to stop rhino poaching

A Special Rhino Protection Force is coming up in Assam. It will help Kaziranga, Manas and Pobitora check rhino poachings in near future. Another project on the card is a special task force to deal with encroachment in the Kaziranga National Park along with other the other forest land. These were more or less of what Prakash Javadekar said just before the Union Environment and Forests Minister had left back for New Delhi on Saturday. According to the minister, in the initial stage local youths would form the force as they knew both the forests and animals.

Women varsity classes from Sep 10

The stages are set. Come September 10. Assam Women’s University will begin its classes. The first academic session will initially include graduate and post-graduate courses. The subjects include Travel and Tourism, Mass Communication, Business Management, Information and Computer Science, Cultural Studies and Fine Arts, Fashion Design and Technology, English and Psychology. The classes would take place at the old campus of the Grain Storage Research Institute of AAU in Rowriah. Poaching riddles Kaziranga: Javadekar

Union minister for forest and environment Prakash Javadekar is deeply concern over the rampant rhino poaching incidents that stifles the world heritage site. Local residents rushed to Javadekar as soon as the Union minister arrived in the national park on Friday to assess the poaching incidents in Kaziranga. Accompanied by state forest minister Rockybul Hussain, Javadekar assured the local residents that a slew of measures would have to be in place to firmly deal with the rhino poaching incidents. Later, Javadekar held a high level meeting of forest authorities where rhino poaching incidents figured prominently. The minister would hold more meetings after visiting the national park.

Karimganj mires in Badaun syndrome

In a bizarre incident that touches off seismic waves of shock and anger, two minor girls were believed to have been killed after being raped in Karimganj district bordering Bangladesh. A minor boy met watery grave in Guwahati after the rainwaters wreaked havoc in the city on Friday. The shocking incident took place in Barshapara area in the morning.
