JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Saradha scam: CBI quizzes Manoranjana

The CBI team probing the multi crore Saradha scam is believed to have received some stunning revelations when it interrogated Manoranjana Singh on Sunday. Singh, who took Rs 25 crore from Sudipta Sen to set up the Frontier TV in Guwahati, was quizzed at CBI’s Salt Lake office in the evening. Sinh, the estranged wife of Matang Singh was interrogated in full view of Sudipta Sen who disclosed all these transaction in a purported letter to the authorities. Crackdown against NDFB-S

 Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has directed the police to launch a massive manhunt to arrest the killers of the class IX student. The teenager was shot dead by NDFB or National Democratic Front of Bodoland ultras in the presence of her parents at Dwimugri village under Runikhata police station in Chirang district as the militants suspected her of being a police informer. The police admitted that the body was retrieved at least 24 hours after she was killed and blamed remoteness of the village and non-cooperation by villagers for the delay. Notably, she was killed on August 20 while her body was retrieved in the evening the next day.

Govt announces bravery award

The Assam government will institute a bravery award in the name of the 16-year-old girl a week after she was killed by Bodo militants.Police retrieved her body 24 hours after she was shot dead. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced Rs 20 lakh as ex-gratia to the girl's family and institution of a bravery award in her name besides recommending her name to the Centre for the National Bravery Award.In a statement, Gogoi said that his government will perpetuate the hallowed memory of the little brave girl who defied the dictates of the killers.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has dared BJP to substantiate the allegations that his government did not clear Rajnath Singh’s stock-taking visit.In statement on Sunday, Gogoi charged the state BJP unit with taking recourse to falsehood alleging that the state government did not give the go-ahead to the Union Home Minister to visit Assam citing security reasons.Terming it a blatant lies, Gogoi said that his government did not give the go-ahead to the Union Home Minister to visit Assam on security grounds. Flood situation worsens in Majuli

More rains seem to have brought misery for Majuli. The largest river island on this planet is now cut off from the rest of the world after the Brahmaputra river waters washed away the surface communication points. Over 100 villages in this seat of Vaishnavite culture has come under the flood wave displacing over 1 lakh people during the last 48 hours.  Rainwaters are likely to wreak havoc in Guwahati again during the next couple of days if the weathermen are to be believed.  Met department has predicted heavy rain in and around the premier north eastern city from Sunday which is likely to continue for the next couple of days forcing the authorities to remain alert. Curfew relaxed till 8 PM in Golaghat

Life is limping back to normalcy in Golaghat district. Curfew in the violence-hit district was relaxed for further two hours till 8 pm on Saturday following no fresh incident. The prohibitory order imposed on April 20 was relaxed by the district administration for 14 hours from 6 am while it was 12 hours on Friday.  Night curfew from 8 pm to 6 am will, however, continue to be in force. Flood fury takes worse turn

 The flood situation in Dhemaji district has gone from bad to worse on Saturday following the breach of an embankment on the river Jiadhol at Tekjuri. The Brahmaputra and all its tributaries in the district were flowing above the danger level affecting over 3 lakh people. No let-up in Lakhimpur flood

 Lakhimpur district continues to reel under the second wave of flood waters. The situation worsened on Saturday as the water level of the river Subansiri is still on the rise. Yet another person was washed away at Chauldhua village in Lakhimpur on Friday night. With this, the toll has gone up to 3.   The river Subansiri is flowing above the danger level following heavy rainfall forcing more than 1000 families in Lakhimpur district to take shelter in relief camps set up by the district administration. /

Police firing toll goes up to 4

Yet another person died on Saturday three days after he sustained injury in Golaghat police firing.  Identified as Gokul Barik, the 20-year-old daily wage earner succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours at a Guwahati hospital. Baraik was injured in Wednesday's police firing in Golaghat. He was admitted to Jorhat hospital with bullet injury and later referred to Guwahati. With this, the toll in Golaghat police firing has gone up to 4. At least seven organisations, which called an indefinite shutdown of the district to protest the state government's failure to handle the recent violence in the inter-state border, also called off the shutdown on Thursday night. /
