JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Why don’t blame Centre ?

 Stunned by statewide criticism, chief minister Tarun Gogoi blamed it all on Union home minister Rajnath Singh for the Assam-Nagaland border flare up. Addressing a press conference in Dispur on Wednesday, Gogoi said the Centre has failed to provide security in the border region. Gogoi deplored that he was responsible as a chief minister. But in the same breath he dared the political parties and organizations slamming his to show the same approach to the Centre.   “ Why are same charges not being made against the union home minister for failing to give protection?" said Gogoi. Curfew in Golaghat; 3 killed in firing

 Yet another place in Golaghat turned into a battle field on Wednesday a after the Rangajan tragedy. Three people were killed and at least 30 others sustained injury when security forces sprang upon a huge crowd of protesters in Golaghat district on Wednesday. The incident took place at Erengapar area when a section of people who took to the streets in protest against the Rangajan police excess, clashed with the security forces who tried to quell them. Rains wreaking havoc in Guwahati

Rain waters are back in Guwahati to wreak havoc after a heavy down pour lashed the city on Wednesday. The rains that lashed the city for nearly an hour began at 3 in the afternoon to be followed by massive waterlogging in many parts towards the evening. Parts of the Guwahati-Shillong Road have been caught in the waterlogging to result in a huge traffic snarl for several hours. Probe into Rangajan firing

 Additional chief secretary Subhash Chandra Das will probe the Rongajan firing incident that left 22 civilians and seven police personnel injured on Tuesday. Addressing a press conference in Dispur on Wednesday,   Gogoi condemned the police action against protesters at Rangajan area and said the government will order an inquiry.      

Modi seeks Uriamghat reports

 Finally the Centre  steps in to defuse the Assam-Nagaland border tension. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday asked home ministry to submit a report on the entire situation a week after Naga miscreants killed at least 14 local residents of Uriamghat.  But the Centre would only assist the state government to contain the violence.   The Centre has already rushed around 1,000 additional paramilitary personnel for deployment along the Assam-Nagaland border. //

Uriamghat: KMSS dhana in Dispur

 The heat of Assam-Nagaland border violence seems to have touched Dispur. KMSS protestors on Wednesday staged dharna out the assembly demanding steps to defuse the escalating tension along the inter state border. KMSS leaders said that the Gogoi government has been failing to firmly deal with the situation. Speaker Pranab Gogoi appealed to the protestors to remain calm. He assured them of steps to efficiently deal with the situation where at least 14 local residents of Uriamghat were killed in Naga miscreants.

Flood brings Rs 200 cr annual loss

The problem is grave. Present is tense while the future is indefinite. Yes, we are talking of the flood problem that ravages the state every year.The loss is an astronomical Rs 200 crore in average per year. This is what the figure state Economic Survey.According to its recent report, the perennial problem submerges 40 per cent of the state’s total land. Gogoi-TR Zeliang talks tomorrow

 Amid the simmering border flare up, Chief minister Tarun Gogoi is all set to hold a fence-mending talks with his Nagaland counterpart on Thursday. Both the chief ministers are scheduled to meet in Dispur at 11 in the morning where the border violence would figure for an amicable solution. Gogoi has been blaming it all on Nagaland for the volatile situation in Golaghat district for the last couple of days. He further has asked for prime minister Narendra Modi’s direct intervention for an amicable settlement of the decade old problem.   

Uriamghat: NSCN-IM under scanner

 The Assam-Nagaland border erupted in violence not because of the group clash. It’s a handiwork of NSCN(M) if the reliable sources are to be believed. According to sources available with Assam Times a circle of the insurgents is involved in the border flare up where at least 14 local residents of Uriamghat area were killed and over 50 houses were torched. The Centre is believed to received the input. But it is not in a position to convey it to the pro talk militant outfit in the absence of the interlocutor. /

Additional forces in Uriamghat

Extra security forces have arrived in Uriamghat along the Assam-Nagaland border in Golaghat district.Altogether nine Central Reserve Police Force posts have been handling the situation. Now these new forces have increased the strength.Immediately after the arrival of the new forces, the authorities cleared the blockade on the National Highway 39 leading to Nagaland on Tuesday.The Centre rushed the additional forces after Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had sought the Centre’s intervention for restoration of peace in the Uriamghat area of Golaghat.
