JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

AHRC notice to Govt on encephalitis

The Assam Human Rights Commission has written to Dispur seeking a report on the alleged failure to firmly deal with the outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis that killed atleast 100 people during that last couple of days. The state rights panel issued the notice to chief secretary JS Khosla taking a suo moto cognizance of a petition filed by Dr Zoii Nath Sarma alleging violation of human rights by the concerning authorities by not taking preventive measures. The Commission has asked for a report of the inclusive enquiry into the allegations within 30 days.  

Contain draught like scene: CM

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked agriculture department to come up with measures to contain the situation. Gogoi on Friday asked for a report on it from Secretary Amlan Barua. This was followed by agriculture minister Nilamani Sen Deka’s meeting with senior officials of his department took stock of the situation prevailing in the eight districts following scanty rainfall. Deka directed the officials to take all possible measures to cope with the situation and sought detailed reports from the district Deputy Commissioners and the agriculture officials of the affected districts.  

ULFA militant held in Majuli

Majuli police on Friday captured an anti-talk faction ULFA militant two weeks ahead of the Independence Day. Identified as Deepak Patowary alias Deepak Bora, the 36 year old ULFA man was arrested in the wee hours during an operation in the river island. Acting on a tip off that an ULFA militant was hiding at Borguri Joorbil, police launched an operation on Thursday midnight where he was captured in the wee hours. Six ULFA(I) extortion notices and two mobile hand sets were recovered from the militant.  He joined ULFA in 1996 and later surrendered in 2007 and returned to insurgency in 2011 by joining Paresh Baruah led ULFA(I) faction for recruitment and extortion drives in Majuli,...

No threat of dissidence on the floor

Dissident camp is meeting on Saturday in Dispur to fine tune their strategies in the Assam Assembly. But they are unlikely to create any scene on the floor from Monday. The dissident legislators led by Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma have been trying to corner the chief minister Tarun Gogoi and his loyalists. ULFA militants killed in explosion

Three anti-talk ULFA militants were killed when a powerful bomb exploded inside a house where they stayed in Goalpara district on Friday. The incident took place inside a house in Mungrai village under Agia police station bordering Meghalaya in the morning where the trio died on the spot.  According to police, it was an IED which went off where the militants stayed planning massive explosion in the run up to the Independence Day. /

Whip to deal with Cong dissidence

In a bid to get rid of any dissidence in the upcoming Assam Assembly session, Congress will issue a three-line whip to its members in a day or two. Sources told Assam Times that chief whip Nilomoni Sendeka will issue the whip in the CLP meeting slated for Sunday to ensure that every ruling party legislator is present in the House for smooth passage of bills and the budget. Any legislator violating the whip would be liable to face strict disciplinary action such as expulsion and disqualification.

AGP dharna on Monday

The Asom Gana Parishad will stage dharna in font of the Assam Assembly on Monday. AGP leaders told Assam Times that they would registrar protest against the move for seeking Centre’s nod for asylum to the Bangladeshi immigrants who came to Assam after 1972.

ATR aircrafts back in the sky

 Alliance Air resumes its operations in the north eastern region from Friday. The wholly-owned subsidiary of Air India will fly from Kolkata to Shillong in Meghalaya.  Further it will fly from Tezpur and Lilabari two months after the services came to a grinding halt. According to information, the ATR aircrafts would fly on three sectors – Kolkata, Guwahati, Tezpur. 5 feared dead in Cachar landslip

Five people were feared dead when the camp in which they lived in collapsed in landside in Cachar district bordering Manipur. The incident took place in a remote area of Kantum under Lakhipur on Monday. Three bodies were exhumed on Wednesday. Two other bodies have yet to be recovered, Local villagers told Assam Times that the five persons on Sunday had gone to the forest and set up a temporary camp. Incessant rainfall triggered the landslide on Monday night overrunning their camp and buried them there. KMSS breaks fast, to talk to govt

Finally, the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti on Thursday agreed to talk to the government. The talks is slated on August 2 in Guwahati.
