JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

JINTUL TALUKDAR, BAKSA: Baska police have picked up one more person on Tuesday in connection with the recent incident where suspected NDFB-S militants four local lemon traders. According to information, the person who was arrested on Tuesday morning is believed to have helped the Bodo militants kidnapped the local traders to be killed.  Police on Monday arrested three linkmen for helping militants. On the other hand, the authorities have lifted the curfew during the day time from Tuesday. 70 fall ill for food poisoning

 Over 70 people are undergoing treatment in Jorhat after they consumed gram and pulse served at a ritual ceremony on Monday forcing Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Solanki Vishal Vasant has ordered an enquiry into the incident. The ritual ceremony was organized at Alengmora Khutiaputa area under Pulibor police station where 70 people including   23 children took ill after consuming 'prasad' on Tuesday. Local residents told Assam Times that these people complained of severe stomachache and vomiting hours after they consumed grams and pulse. They were rushed to the Solmora Primary Health Centre and later shifted to the Jorhat Medical College Hospital.

No hike in potato-onion prices!

There would be no immediate hike in the prices of onion and potatoes. Food and civil supplies department sources told Assam Times that the trucks carrying potatoes and onions bound for Assam and its neighbouring states are leaving West Bengal after the government intervention. Food and civil supplies minister Dr Nazrul Islam apprised chief minister Tarun Gogoi of the entire situation on Monday. Gogoi asked Dr Islam to keep a strict vigil on the prices of potato and onion in the market. AGP to clear Mahanta’s move

 Asom Gana Parishad is holding its brainstorming session on Tuesday a day after Prafulla Kumar Mahanta’s resigned a president owning moral responsibility for the party’s defeat in the recent Lok Sabha polls. AGP looks for new president

 The Asom Gana Parishad seems to have landed in fresh crisis. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has resigned as president on Monday allowing the party to look for a new head. Mahanta tendered his resignation at the party’s executive body meeting held at its party headquarters in Ambari. T he former chief minister resigned owning moral responsibility of the party’s defeat in the recent Lok Sabha polls where it failed even to open the account.  The party could not retain its Rajya Sabha seat in the polls held in February.
