JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Heat forces schools to remain closed

A soaring mercury level has forced the authorities to keep schools and colleges closed in Guwahati.Kamrup (Metro) district administration has asked all schools and colleges to remain closed on Friday and Saturday because of unprecedented heat.The Goalpara district administration has also followed the suit asking the schools and college goers to keep at home to get rid of the sweltering heat on Friday and Saturday.Notably, parts of Assam have been burning in 40 degree Celsius for the last couple of days. Subba’s condition critical

Mani Kumar Subba’s condition is believed to have deteriorated during the last couple of hours.According to the sources, Subba’s condition is “very critical” and a team of specialists is closely monitoring his condition.     Subba, who has been undergoing treatment of cardiac ailment at the Medanta,the Medicity in Gurgaon is on ventilation support.The independent candidate from Tezpur was shifted to  the Gurgaon based hospital on April 6 two days after he was rushed to Guwahati following the complaint of heart attack.  

Voters turn out 77%:EC

There has been sharp rise in the voters’ turn out in the Lok Sabha polls this time.The initial report of the Election Commission suggested on Thursday evening that the overall turn out is 77 per cent which was 71 per cent in 2009. The turn out figure is expected to increase as the state polling authority has yet to ascertain the figure.

Bijoya demands repolling in 2 booths

Guwahati BJP candidate Bijoya Chakrabarty on Thursday moved the Election Commission demanding fresh polling at two booths in Guwahati metro.The sitting MP has written to the country’s poll panel alleging anomalies in the electronic voting machines in Hengrabari LP School and Gneshpara booths.

Turn out sets record

A huge turn out seems to have set record in the third and final phase of Lok Sabha polls in six constituencies on Thursday.The average percentage polling in all the six constituencies stands at 75 per cent when voting formally closed at 5 in the afternoon. Voting has formally closed in Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency at 5 on Thursday evening. The fate of 18 candidates has sealed in the electronic voting machines to be taken out for counting on May 16.  The turn out in the city has not picked up as it was anticipated in the city. But the picture in the outskirt of the city is quite encouraging.Barring the city, the overall turn out of voters is set to cross 80 per cent. Polling ends peacefully in Mongoldoi

Despite a 40 degree Celsius temperature, polling has ended in Mongoldoi with a heavy turn out of voters on Thursday.The polling formally closed at 5 in the evening. But voters were seen standing in long queues in front of the polling stations till 6.to cast their votes. Enthusiasm was noticed among the first time voters in the 18-21 years age group as they lined up in large numbers in 1852 polling booths to decide the fate of 12 candidates. Barpeta: where turnout sets record

Polling has ended with a brisk note in Barpeta as soon as the clock struck at 5 in the evening. The turn out is set to cross 85 per cent to be confirmed by the country’s poll panel.Heavy turn out of voters in this crucial constituency have sealed the fate of candidates after the poll was conducted in 1906 booths. Sitting MP and Congress candidate Ismile Hussain is facing a keen contest with AIUDF candidate Sirajuddin  Ajmal while BJP candidate Chandra Mohan Patowary and his AGP rival and former party colleague Phani Bhushan Chaudhury have been enjoying no less popularity and support.       Counting will take place on May 16.
