3 accidents: 8 dead

Amid Bhugali bihu festivity at least eight persons were killed and 10 others have been injured in three different road mishaps on Tuesday wee hours.
In a shocking mishap, four policemen were killed when the Scorpio vehicle carrying them collided head with a truck in Laluk in the wee hours. Three others have been battling for life in GMCH.
The second mishap took place in Bogionadi where a Tata Mobile vehicle carrying 13 people turned turtle on the road early in the morning where 2 died on the spot while eight others injured have been rushed to the hospital.
In yet another accident 2 people were killed as an Indigo vehicle rammed into a bike in Hajo early in the morning. The bike duo died on the spot.

Paralyzing bandh

A 12 hour statewide Assam bandh hit normal life across the north eastern state on Monday. Called by six ethic groups reiterating the demand for scheduled tribe (ST) status the bandh was marked by a few stray incidents.Koch-Rajbongshi, Moran, Motok, Chutia, Tai Ahom and Adivasi tea garden workers communities have called the bandh alleging the government failure to keep the poll promises.Bandh supporters blocked many vital roads disrupting surface communication while some of them stopped the movement of traffic by burning tyres and prevented many shops and markets from opening during the 12 hours.

Workshop on Sanchipaat painting

Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva (SSS) has started a five day long workshop on 'Preparation of Sanchipaat manuscript and painting in Sankari style' at Batadrava Than from July 2 in association with Batadrava Than Management Committee. There will be practical lessons in preparation of Sanchipaat and use of Hengul-Haital to paint art on Sanchipaat. Mridu Moucham Bora, Secretary of SSS is the main resource person of this workshop. Protest over Governor’s statement

We are highly surprised over the statement of Banwarilal Purohit, the honourable Governor of Assam in a public meeting at Maniyari near Barpeta. He has said in that meeting that Srimanta Sankaradeva did not do any thing to remove the malaise of child-marriage. This is an offensive statement to say the least. Landslide kills 5 in Ri Bhoi

Five people were killed and five others are believed to have been trapped when a huge hillock slipped atop the Umiam hill in Meghalaya on Saturday. The incident took place in the afternoon when three houses where collapsed by the eroded soil and mud in the Ri Bhoi district. The district authority has deployed workers in search of five others who are believed to have been trapped in the huge heap of soil and mud. "An incessant rain makes it difficult for us to continue the search operation "said a worker deployed in the search operation.

Five dead in Guwahati landslides

Rainwaters in Guwahati have been receding where some low lying areas would take a few days more to be cleared of the stagnant waters. But the Guwahati denizens are yet to get out of the blues where a series of incidents of landslides have claimed five lives so far.  The Guwahati authorities have identified 366 landslide prone areas in 14 hills surrounding the capital city and have appealed to come down to avoid the in pending disaster.

Guwahati rainwater toll mounts to 4 with a state secretetate employee Deben Nath was washed away by the river Bahini on Wrdnesday as he was crossing a bamboo bridge. The Assam government has announced Rs.400,000 as ex gratia to each of the four families.
