Actor joins TMC

Noted film actor Biju Phukan joined Trinamool Congress in presence of Mamata Banerjee at a function in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Phukan, who once contested the assembly polls from AGP told the TMC boss that he was prepared to fight the polls.

People thronged in thousands at the sarusajai Stadium to attend the TMC rally where Mamata Banerjee drew appreciation.

Ms. Banerjee clarified, while addressing a party rally in Guwahati, that Trinamool Congress was a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government when it was headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee but her party would not support any party that incites communal violence and hatred on the basis of religion, caste, creed or community.

Security forces claimed to have captured a dreaded GNLA rebel along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Thursday.Identified as Ramu Ch Marak, the most wanted Garo militant was held during a joint operation by army and police at Shantipur near Boko in Kamrup district in the morning.Police further recovered a 9mm pistol along with a magazine, three rounds ammunition, one radio set, demand pads, AJRF stamps of the outfit group from his possession.According to Assam Times Crime Investigative Bureau, the GNLA militant is believed to have revealed his involvement in extortion, kidnapping, supplying weapons and other acts of terrorism along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

In yet another bizarre incident that sends shockwaves across the state, an aged person died on Tuesday a day after his son attacked him in Nagaon district.Identified as Ram Kumar Chouhan, he attacked his father Shyam Kumar Chouhan at Sutirpar with a sharp weapon on Monday afternoon.A seriously injured Shyam Kumar was admitted to the BP Civil Hospital in a critical condition where he succumbed to injuries on Tuesday morning. Despite round-the clock vigil, suspected ULFA militants exploded two low-intensity in Digboi amid the Republic Day celebration in the oil town on Monday.Police officials told Assam Times that the low intensity explosions took place early in the morning near a railway track which were planted under a heap of garbage. There is however, no report of any damage.   Security forces arrived in the spot and investigations are in progress. The explosions took place hours before the national flag was hoisted in the oil town.
The centre has announced padma award to three prominent personalities on the occassion of Republic day. Padmabibhushan award goes to Jahnu Borua while Dr  Lakhinandan Bora and Jadab Payeng would get the coveted padmabhushan award.
