Actor joins TMC

Noted film actor Biju Phukan joined Trinamool Congress in presence of Mamata Banerjee at a function in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Phukan, who once contested the assembly polls from AGP told the TMC boss that he was prepared to fight the polls.

People thronged in thousands at the sarusajai Stadium to attend the TMC rally where Mamata Banerjee drew appreciation.

Ms. Banerjee clarified, while addressing a party rally in Guwahati, that Trinamool Congress was a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government when it was headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee but her party would not support any party that incites communal violence and hatred on the basis of religion, caste, creed or community.

PM flags off train to Mendipathar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Guwahati-Mendhipothar train in Meghalaya at a function in Guwahati on Saturday.In his speech the prime minister stressed better rail connectivity in the north eastern region saying that his the region will be the thrust area of his government.Governor JB Patnaik, Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal, Kiren Rijiju, Chief minister Tarun Gogoi and his Meghalaya counterpart Dr Mukul Sangma were among those who attended the function at Maligaon organized by the Northeastern Frontier Railway.

Amid tight security prime minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Guwahati on a two days visit to the north eastern region on Saturday. Modi landed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at 4 in the afternoon to be received by state BJP heavyweights.

Amid tight security, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Guwahati on Saturday on a two days north east visit.Modi who is on a maiden visit to the region will land in Guwahati in the afternoon. Then he would open the railway service to Meghalaya at a function in Maligaon.Then he would attend a valedictory function of the Assam Tribune at the Machkhowa. Then he would leave for the Raj Bhawan to spend the night.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh is on a three days visit to the north east. Singh arrived in Guwahati on Friday evening a day before the DGP-IGP conference in the city. He is laying the foundation stone of the Central Forensic Laboratory at Mirza in the outskirt of Guwahati on Saturday morning.

A local TADA court in Guwahati granted bail to the NDFB boss for the next 6 months.The court passed the order for interim bail after the government refused to raise any objection on Friday.The court earlier refused to grant him bail and asked for the government affidavit.

Tourist guide training at Jorhat

Tourism Department of Assam Government has taken initiatives to start training young people who can become tour guides and become self employed. Trader shot dead in Lakhimpur

The United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) seems to have unleashed a reign of terror in the run up to Narendra Modi’s visit slated for Saturday. ULFA militants belonging to Paresh Baruah faction shot dead a Hindi speaking man in Lakhimpur district on Thursday.According to police, two motorcycle-borne assailants started indiscriminate firing at a trader near a petrol depot in the town early in the morning.Identified as Kumud Kumar Patel, the trader died on the spot while two others sustained injury. The duo have been identified as Santosh Patel and Rupak Kumar who are undergoing treatment in the hospital.  

ULFA man killed in shoot out

Amid stepped up offensive, security forces killed an Ulfa(I) rebel on Thursday two days before Prime Minister’s maiden visit to Assam.  Identified as Nitul Gogoi, the ULFA man was killed near Tingkhang in in Dibrugarh district in the morning. ULFA-I later called Gogoi a pro-talks faction of the Ulfa. 

ULFA threatens to target BJP

The United Liberation Front of Asom on Thursday threatened to target BJP leaders and activists in the run up to Narendra Modi’s visit to Guwahati slated for Saturday.In a statement sent to media on Thursday, the outfit demands complete information on the ULFA leaders who went missing during the operation all clear in Bhutan.
