Actor joins TMC

Noted film actor Biju Phukan joined Trinamool Congress in presence of Mamata Banerjee at a function in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Phukan, who once contested the assembly polls from AGP told the TMC boss that he was prepared to fight the polls.

People thronged in thousands at the sarusajai Stadium to attend the TMC rally where Mamata Banerjee drew appreciation.

Ms. Banerjee clarified, while addressing a party rally in Guwahati, that Trinamool Congress was a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government when it was headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee but her party would not support any party that incites communal violence and hatred on the basis of religion, caste, creed or community.

The United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) seems to have unleashed a reign of terror in the run up to Narendra Modi’s visit slated for Saturday. ULFA militants belonging to Paresh Baruah faction shot dead a Hindi speaking man in Lakhimpur district on Thursday.According to police, two motorcycle-borne assailants started indiscriminate firing at a trader near a petrol depot in the town early in the morning.Identified as Kumud Kumar Patel, the trader died on the spot while two others sustained injury. The duo have been identified as Santosh Patel and Rupak Kumar who are undergoing treatment in the hospital.  
Amid stepped up offensive, security forces killed an Ulfa(I) rebel on Thursday two days before Prime Minister’s maiden visit to Assam.  Identified as Nitul Gogoi, the ULFA man was killed near Tingkhang in in Dibrugarh district in the morning. ULFA-I later called Gogoi a pro-talks faction of the Ulfa.
