Role of AASU in Assam

The All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) is a mouthpiece of the people of Assam. Since its inception the AASU has been fighting for the cause of Assam and making its presence felt politically in the entire nation. After the anti foreigner’s movement in Assam which was triggered off by infiltration of Bangladeshis from the border areas, a fear psychosis among the Assamese of losing their identities and cultural bondings led to the formation of AASU. The students of Assam united to form the AASU and lead the people of Assam in their struggle for protecting their identity. It resulted in the signing of the Assam accord. Though the AASU has undergone many splits and various other student organizations like Tai Ahom Students Union, All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) have come into existence, the AASU is still following the chosen path of being with the people of Assam and respecting the peoples’ democratic ideals. Though now its role has become even more manifolds with Assam facing newer challenges but the AASU still holds a beacon to the Assamese community during thick and thin high and low.

The AASU raises its voice every time it feels Assam is threatened by external or internal factors. Whether it is urging the central government to implement the Assam Accord, evict illegal Bangladeshis to save Assam or to protest for any injustice to its people, the AASU is the voice of Assam. It has also taken upon itself to uphold the Assamese culture and tradition and is working with the state and central government to maintain peace and unity in the state.

However it should be more vocal regarding the mayhem unfolded by extremists groups which has resulted in the loss of life of many innocent Assamese as well as Hindi speaking people. Instead of calling for bandhs to protest against issues it can resort to protest marches, dharnas etc for then people take notice of the cause behind the protests whereas bandhs not only effect the daily wage earners it also fails to register itself in the minds of the people as it becomes just another holiday for them. Bandhs also affect the state’s economy and slows down the development process of the state.

Moreover, women representation in AASU is quite negligible therefore it should take measures to ensure equal representation of female members by encouraging them.

The AASU being a student’s body has an important role to play in the lives of the student community therefore it should lead by example. It has done commendable work by recently felicitating meritorious student and therefore inspired them to achieve nobler goals.

The people of Assam have found a mouthpiece in the AASU and the future of Assam depends on these students who would carry forward the heritage of Assam by righteous means.

Well written.. The representation of lady is not so law in AASU..In different committe at district level or ancholik or branch level, there are various girl representatives. But yes in central body no girl representation is now. Moreover any student without relating any political party can be a part of AASU. We too thanx AASU as atleast for this organisation something can hope for the benefit of Assam. Even already various good and comandable works done by our loving this org, ie, AASU. Thank u to AASU too.

Akhil to sit in indefinite fast from Sunday

KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi will sit in indefinite hunger-strike in Guwahati from Sunday to mount pressurize on the government to stop police excess on anti-dam activists in Lakhimpur district. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, he said that several other organisations would join him. He claimed that KMSS would continue to oppose the NHPC-owned big dam in Gerukamukh. He said, “despite my ill health I have decided to sit in indefinite hunger strike to protest inhuman atrocities heaped on our peaceful and democratic protestors in Lakhimpur.”

Separate Bodoland must have parts of north Assam

Peoples' Joint Action Committee for Bodoland Movement on Friday renewed their demand for a separate Bodoland including parts of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts. More than three thousand members of PJACBM staged a dharna in Tezpur and submitted a memorandum to Assam Governor JB Patnaik through Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner. PJACBM conveners asked the government to expedite the peace process with NDFB(Progressive) to pave the way for early creation of a separate Bodoland. They said that the Bodo people and other indigenous tribals have lost their grip on their land and their survival as distinct communities with a socio-cultural identity is threatened.

HS results by May-end: AHSEC

The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council will announce the results of the higher secondary examinations in the last week of May. In a statement issued on Friday, AHSEC secretary UC Das said that the students have fared pretty well after they introduced the NCERT syllabus. Around 2,19,140 candidates have appeared the examination this year, with 2,17,953 students from arts, science and commerce and 1,187 from the vocational stream. He said that the NCERT course allows for high scores and that there hasn't been any mistake in the results.

Insurgent outfits under control: Gogoi

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday claimed to have brought the insurgent outfits under control. But in the same breath, he said that a set of clear cut strategies is needed to firmly deal with Maoist elements. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, the chief minister said that the Maoists elements selected the entire northeastern region in view of the bordering countries. He said that the Maoists are spreading their diabolic tentacles in the entire region and that police force needs to be strengthen apart from initiatives for the underdeveloped areas. Mahanta blames Gogoi for meager Central fund

AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Friday lambasted Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for his failure to ensured adequate funds from the Centre. Addressing a press conference a day after he took over as party president, he called the Central grant for 2011-12 a meager blaming it all on the Gogoi government’s inefficiency. Mahanta said that the amount in quite meager compared to UP, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

No plan for immediate retirement:CM

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi made it simple that he has no plan for immediate retirement. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, he said that as long as is health remains fine he would continue. He said he would quit as soon as his MLAs wish so.

Party needs more strength: Mahanta

Asom Gana Parishad president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Friday urged the party leaders to strengthen the party from the grassroots. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, he said that the party has its base in rural areas and we need to strengthen the party from the grassroots so that it can become a strong alternative to the Congress in Assam. He said that the party would hold a meeting of all its district units and cells from May 23-31 in Guwahati to chalk out a strategy to woo the people. Taking a pot shot at Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, he said that the Congress has failed in curbing rising prices of essential commodities and in ensuring safety and security to the people.

Petrol pumps to go dry on Monday

Petrol pumps across Assam are likely to go dry because of the Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union’s strike from Monday alleging government failure to provide adequate safety and security to petroleum workers. Union President Munin Mahanta told reporters in Guwahati on Friday that several organisations resorting to protests, bandhs and other forms of agitations targeting petroleum workers with several tankers being set ablaze by the agitators.
