Scientist–Farmer Interaction Programme on Muga and Eri Sericulture Held in Kokrajhar
KOKRAJHAR, August 21, 2026 — A Scientist–Farmer Interaction Programme under Mera Resham Mera Abhimaan (MRMA) 2.0 was organised at Kazigaon in Parbatjora, Kokrajhar, with the objective of strengthening linkages among scientific institutions, the Department of Sericulture and farming communities, while promoting the adoption of improved technologies in Muga and Eri sericulture.
The programme was coordinated by Dr Suraksha Chanotra, Scientist-B, Central Silk Board, Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organisation (MESSO), P3 Unit, Kowabil, Kokrajhar, in association with Smt Kalpojita Basumatary, Extension Officer, Department of Sericulture, Adabari. Smt Bhanulata Mushahary, Director, Department of Sericulture, BTC, Kokrajhar, attended the programme as the Special Guest. Officials of the Department of Sericulture, Kokrajhar, also participated in the interaction.
A major technical focus was on the promotion of the C2 improved Eri breed alongside the traditional Kokrajhar Eri race, with emphasis on enhancing productivity while conserving locally adapted genetic resources. Farmers were also sensitised to the NBR-2 hybrid variety of castor to improve host-plant productivity and strengthen the Eri rearing system.
Scientific management practices for Muga silkworm rearing were discussed in detail, particularly the selection and preparation of suitable brushing plots for better larval establishment and crop performance. Farmers were also apprised of essential dos and don’ts at different stages of Muga and Eri rearing, including sanitation, hygiene, disinfection, bed cleaning and preventive measures to minimise disease incidence and pathogen transmission.
The interactive session provided farmers with an opportunity to raise field-level technical issues. Their queries regarding the appropriate use and application of disinfectants, ventilation and microclimatic management in cocooning rooms, and other aspects of rearing management were addressed through scientific and practical guidance. Participating farmers expressed satisfaction with the technical clarifications and solutions provided during the session.
Various government schemes and support interventions aimed at promoting, expanding and developing sericulture, as well as facilitating technology adoption, were also discussed. The session helped farmers gain a better understanding of available opportunities and institutional support.
The programme highlighted the farmer-centric approach of MRMA 2.0 in translating scientific knowledge into field-level action. The initiative is expected to contribute to improved technology adoption, enhanced productivity, better disease and hygiene management, and the sustainable development of Muga and Eri sericulture in Kokrajhar district.
