Two Art Students Booked Over Sonam Wangchuk Murals in Guwahati
Police register two cases over unauthorised wall paintings; students served notices after being detained during a night patrol.
GUWAHATI, July 18, 2026 — Guwahati Police have booked two Government College of Art and Crafts students for allegedly painting murals of Sonam Wangchuk on public walls without official permission.
The students—Nukul Mili of Dibrugarh and Gaurav Singh of Guwahati—were detained by a night patrol team from Dispur Police Station while allegedly painting a government wall near Jyoti Bishnu Bhawan late Friday.
Police have registered two separate cases at Dispur Police Station—one over the Sonam Wangchuk mural beneath the Basistha Flyover and another over the alleged attempt to paint a wall near the Bishnu Jyoti Project.
According to police, the duo had no permission to paint on public property. They have been served notices to appear before the investigating officer and will be released as per legal procedure.
Police said unauthorised paintings on government infrastructure amount to defacement of public property and are liable for legal action. Investigators are also trying to identify others involved in the Basistha Flyover mural.
