Rs 520 cr for police modernization

 The Assam government has received a huge fund of Rs 520 crore from the Centre to modernize police since 2004.

The disclosure was made in the Assam Assembly on Monday by forest and environment minister Rockybul Hussain.

According to Hussain, "Out of the total amount, Rs 68.99 crore have been spent on purchasing of vehicles and Rs 92.49 crore were used for arms and ammunition."

Hussain said the police department currently has a total of 5,270 vehicles, of which 2,532 are two-wheelers and the rest are four-wheelers and other higher carriage capacity vehicles.

For running these vehicles, the Assam Police has spent Rs 384.55 crore in purchasing petrol and diesel between 2004-05 and 2013-14.

The city police arrested an ULFA(I) cadre on last night from the Panjabari locality. Acting on a tip-off the police nabbed him from near the Srimanta Shankardeva Kalakeshtra at around 9pm. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal once again reiterated that his government will welcome and accept 'constructive criticism'. Guwahati: Senior journalist Pranabjit Doloi has passed away Monday afternoon (around 5.30 pm on 30 December 2019) in a private hospital. He was suffering from liver related ailments for some time. Started his career in the Sentinel group as a reporter Doloi later worked for satellite news channels including Dy365, Frontier TV, NewsTimeAssam and NewsNetwork. He also earned applauses as a documentary filmmaker. Doloi (50) left behind wife, only son with other relatives and well-wishers.
