AIUDF, Congress and BJP are going neck and neck in the by polls in three assembly constituencies where counting is in progress. AIUDF is likely to retain Jamunamukh as the party candidate Abdur Rahim Ajmal is taking a comfortable lead over BJP and Congress candidates Bilal Uddin and Bashir Uddin Laskar respectively till the 12 rounds of counting. Congress is likely to retain Lakhipur seat where party candidate Rajdeep Goala, the of former MLA Dinesha Prasad Goala continues to take lead over Mukesh Pandey from AIUDF) and Sanjay Thakur from BJP. The ruling Congress is set to lose its Silchar seat where BJP candidate Dilip Kumar Paul is leading over his nearest rival Congress candidate Anjan Majumdar.

HM Conspiracy Case: NIA Court Awards Life Term to Key Accused

In a major crackdown on terror networks, a special NIA court in Guwahati has convicted Md. Kamruj Zaman, a key accused in a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) terror conspiracy case, and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Zaman, also known as Dr Hurairah and Kamaruddin, was awarded life imprisonment under Section 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), along with two additional sentences of five years’ simple imprisonment under other UAPA provisions.
