Durga puja gets underway

 Amid much fanfare and traditional religious fervor, Durga puja festival got underway on Tuesday. The idol of the goddess of strength was formally installed at the alter at 9-30 in the evening chanting hymns and mantras.

Devotees started thronging the puja pendals for puja offering immediately after the installation of the idols. Saptami puja falls on Wednesday. Guwahati alone has over 300 puja pendals this time guarded by security forces apprehending terrorist attack.

Puja pendals, mostly, in Guwahati have installed CCTV cameras following the instruction by the district administration. The idols would be immersed on Saturday afternoon. Cutural functions along with various competitions are also lined the next three days.

  DUDHNOI: A local court in Dudhnoi sent Akhil Gogoi to fourteen days judicial custody after the police produced the KMSS leader before it on Sunday. The court, however, is hearing his bail petition on Tuesday. DUDHNOI: A day after getting Akhil Gogoi in their custody, the Dudhnoi police is producing the KMSS leader before a local court on Sunday. KMSS leaders and workers who are gathering in large number at the court premises hope that Gogoi would be able to procure bail in the afternoon. Amid a mammoth security arrangement the Dudhnoi police arrived at 9 in the evening from Dibrugarh in connection with a case where his activists allegedly wiped out the sign board of the Dindayal Upahyay College.     

Gangraped girl in Boko dead in GMCH

GUWAHATI:Shock and anger grip Assam again when a girl from Boko died in Guwahati Medical College Hospital on Saturday nine days after three local youths gangraped her. The incident took place on December 14 in Rongapani area when three local youths came to her house and gangraped her in the absence of her parents. The seriously injured girl was rushed to the GMCH where she died on Saturday triggering huge protest in the entire area. As the sad news spread like wildfire in the morning people in large number came out to the road demanding immediate arrest of the perpetrators. Boko police have already arrested one of the trio after the incident. Two others are still absconding.

Akhil taken away to Goalpara

DIBRUGARH: Amid a mammoth security arrangement, the Goalpara police have departed Dibrugarh early in the morning with Akhil Gogoi whom they arrested on Friday after the KMSS leader procured bail in a case pending against him in Moran Police station. The huge police team from Dudhnoi who arrived in Dibrigarh on Friday left for Goalpara at 8 in the morning. Gogoi would be kept in Dudhnoi police station for the night and on Sunday only he would be produced before the CJM court. MARGHERITA: Despite combing operations and tight vigil Naga rebels have been moving without any hindrance along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border unleashing terror by extortion. Security forces on Friday held a dreaded Naga rebel from Khonsa area who was believed to have been extorting money from the common people in the area. DIBRUGARH: Finally Akhil Gogoi could not walk out of the jail even a day after the Gauhati High Court set aside the KMSS leader's arrest under NSA. The Dudhnoi police have got Gogoi in their demand on Friday evening in connection with two cases pending against the peasant leader. A team of police moved the Dibrugarh CJM court in the evening seeking the RTI activist in their custody producing some papers before it.
