On 22nd January, a local court in Imphal ordered the release of Irom Sharmila by regarding the charge of "attempt to suicide" as baseless. However, Irom Sharmila has been re-arrested again and has been booked under the same charge of "attempt to suicide" under 309 IPC.  

Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign (SSSC), a nation-wide campaign in support of Irom Sharmila and against AFSPA, condemns the re-arrest. SSSC considers this re-arrest of Irom Sharmila as a mockery of judiciary by the state. While the judiciary had released her by quashing the charges of "attempt to suicide", the state has re-arrested her on the same grounds. 

SSSC believes that it is a failure of state to resolve the issue of AFSPA and it is making Sharmila, a victim of state. At this time when few days ago, even the government said that it is considering the decriminalization of the 309 IPC, it seems that the state functionaries are trying to get the benefit till the time the government decriminalises it.

SSSC appeals with Govt of India to intervene in the issue and to order immediate release of Sharmila. It also appeals that immediate steps should be taken to repeal AFSPA, the cause for which Irom Sharmila is protesting.

AFSPA must be removed in view of large scale human rights violations. Even the state leadership of present ruling party in Central govt had favored in repealing of this act. The state unit of BJP had promised the repeal of AFSPA during the elections. 

SSSC has organised and is continuing its efforts to highlight the issue and struggle of people in AFSPA imposed areas. SSSC has also sent letters and delegations to various authorities and appealed them to repeal this act, however SSSC is determined to initiative a major movement in coming days to protest against this act.

This is outrageous and illegal. She has every right to protest especially against a draconian act which allows armed forces to illegally carry on many illegal activities from within these areas without having to be accountable.It is a known fact that the lapses and corruption in the armed forces leads to much rise in security threat to the State and the nation. Many arms and drugs smugglers pay the army personnel and get through easily. the Secret funds in name of fighting terrorism is all in name when they (armed forces) know who is behind all the terror being bred and funded. Common man cannot fund and protect terrorism. It is the high and the mighty .. We the Civil Society Women Organization(CSWO) Meghalaya, demand that the AFSPA be repealed and flush out the corrupt in the armed forces and clean the mess as the people should not be made scapegoats, unless the whole Indian Army fears one Iron Lady.

5 killed in Palashbai accident

At least five persons were killed when a the vehicle carrying them collided head on in a dumper Palashbari area in the outskirt of Guwahati on Friday.The shocking accident took place in the afternoon at Bhagawatipara where a women died on the spot. Body recovered inside train

An unidentified body of a girl was found from a compartment of the Awadh-Assam Express at Guwahati Railway station on Friday.The body was found after the train arrived in Guwahati from Lalgarh in Rajasthan to be spotted by the cleaners inside a plastic drum near the bathroom of S-7 coach. Railway authorities have ordered an enquiry and efforts are on to identify the passengers, who had boarded the coach and left the bag.

Bandh cripples normal life

The country wide shutdown cripples normal life in Assam for the second day on Thursday.The peaceful bandh has partial response in interior areas of the state. HSLC exam begins; results on May 15

The High School Leaving Certificate and High Madrassa Examinations get underway along with the higher secondary examinations across the state on Monday.Amid tight security arrangement SEBA holds HSLC examinations for 3,84,702 candidates at 823 centres.  The Assma Higher Secondary Education Council conducts the Higher Secondary examination in the Arts, Science, Commerce and vocational streams at 768 centres with 2,36,971 candidates. SEBA will announce the HSLC results on May 15.

Ensure Assam safety: Gogoi to Centre

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked the Centre to ensure that any dam related activities by China in Tibet do not cause ecological problems in the state.Gogoi said in Guwahati on Sunday that if the problems could be addressed, then communities residing in the catchment areas of the river would benefit.According to Gogoi, the state government is committed to holding elections to the Mising Autonomous Council and said the Council has been established for the welfare of Mising community.

4 killed in Tezpur mishap

y at Bishwanath Ghat last night, turned turtle near Panibharal area of Bishwanath Chariali town in the morning, killing four on the spot.Among the 26 injured, 16 were admitted to Bishwanath Chariali Civil Hospital but 13 of them were referred to Tezpur Kanaklata Civil Hospital after their condition became critical.The dead have been identified as 45-year Durga Chetry, 20-year old Krishna Chetry, 18-year old Gopal Chetry and 12-year-old Pinky Sarma.  The vehicle, which was overloaded and speeding, turned turtle four times before rolling down the side of the road.

Food poisoning takes grim turn

Over 500 people have been undergoing critical treatment at different hospitals in Guwahati after consuming food served as Prasad on Friday’s Saraswati Puja in Dimoria area of Kamrup. Food poisoning back with ailments

Over 50 people have fallen ill in Kamrup district of Assam after consuming Prasad on Friday. The patients, mostly, students and their guardians in the outskirt of Guwahati city have been rushed to the hospital as they complained of stomach ailment after consuming Prasad at a Saraswati puja function in Sonapur.
