Tension prevails in Behali, near the Assam-Arunachal border in Sonitpur district after the India Reserve Battalion (IR Bn) allegedly opened fire on innocent people yesterday. The incident occurred at around 11 am at Chawaldhowa in the Behali Reserved Forest when forest officials accompanied by Sonitpur district administration engaged a group of labourers to start building work of the border outposts. According to sources, the battalion stationed in the area opened fire upon the innocent labourers forcing them to flee the spot.
The Behali RF is part of the Sonitpur Elephant Reserve notified in 2003 on the Assam-Arunachal border. Encroachment has threatened the very existence of this reserve. IR Bn’s role has come under the scanner.
