Flood waters are wreaking havoc in Kaziranga National Park. The famed abode of the one- horned rhino has come under the surging waters after the river Brahmaputra started flowing above the danger level. Park authorities told Assam Times that the flood inundated low-lying areas in almost all the ranges with the animals moving to the highlands in neighbouring Karbi Anglong district. Water has entered 50 camps across the Park with three camps evacuated in the Northern range. The flood have forced many birds and animals to be migrated to the highland across NH-37. To check speeding vehicles barricades have been set up and time-cards introduced to control the speed of the vehicles.
The overall flood situation remains grim on Sunday a day after two minor boys met watery grave in Lakhimpur and Nagaon districts. The water levels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries have been rising for the last few days inundating vast tracts of land in upper Assam. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi asked for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal intervention to restore peace in Uriamghat along the boiling Assam-Nagaland border. The All Assam Students Union on Saturday demanded governor JB Patnaik’s intervention into the Assam-Nagaland border flare up. The Election Commission has announced the schedule of the by polls in Janunamukh, Silchar and Lakhipur. The last date for filing nominations in the three assembly constituencies is August 27. Scrutiny will take place on August 28 while the last date for withdrawal of nomination is August 29. The polling will take place from 7 in the morning till 5 in the afternoon on September 13. The counting will be held on September 16. By polling in Silchar was required following the election of Sushmita Dev to the Lok Sabha while Lakhipur will go to the polls following the expiry of MLA Dinesh Prasad Gowala.
The Assam Public Service Commission will hold the Combined Competitive (Preliminary) Examination-2014 on September 28 to select the candidates for 180 ACS, APS and allied services. According to the commission, the examination would take place from 10 in the morning in all district headquarters on that day.
In a major reshuffle in Assam BJP unit, Siddharth Bhattacharya is all set to replace Sarbananda Sonowal as the party’s state president.
