Guwahati IIT is gearing up for the 17th convocation ceremony slated for Monday.
IIT-G officials told Assam Times that the event is being organized at the Dr Bhupen Hazarika auditorium where Union Minister of Human Resource Development Smriti Irani will attend as the chief guest.
The Chairman of Board of Governors, IIT Guwahati, Dr Rajendra Pratap Singh, will also be present at the convocation.
Altogether 1117 students – 578 Bachelor of Technology (BTech) and Bachelor of Design (BDes), 24 Master of Arts (MA), 124 Master of Science (MSc), 267 Master of Technology (MTech) and Master of Design (MDes) and 124 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – will receive their degrees at the convocation.
Akhil Gogoi is back in business with a huge protest rally outlining a few old demands in Guwahati on Monday a couple of days after the change of guards in Dispur. Flanked by prominent intellectual Dr Hiren Gohain, Gogoi vowed to go hammer and tongue against the anti people policies of the governments both in Delhi and Dispur. BSF Director General K K Sharma visited the Indo-Bangladesh border in Silchar sector on Saturday a few days after Union home minister Rajnath Singh ordered complete seal of the international border. According to official sources, during the inspection, the BSF chief visited Steamerghat based border outpost where the officials apprised him of the state of affairs in the 3.5 km unfenced border portion. He further got a view of the riverine international border on Kushyara and talked to the BSF jawans asking them to guard against the trans border crimes.

The newly elected legislative members took oath in the first day of the Assam assembly on Wednesday. Pro tem Speaker Phani Bhushan Chaudhury administered the members the oath as the legislative assembly members. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal was the first to have taken oath. The House unanimously elected Ranjit Kumar Das as the new Speaker. Assam Congress president Anjan Dutta’s condition deteriorates further on Thursday forcing the AIIMS authority in New Delhi to shift him to the intensive care unit. Dutta, who has been ailing for the last couple of days were admitted to the country’s top hospital in the capital last week where his condition has refused to improve.
