Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state. 

Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.

 “We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning against animal sacrifice.

Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”

“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.

Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour against animal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric. A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.

Leap-frog in rhino population

Despite being by rhino poaching Kaziranga is shining with increasing population of the one horn rhino. This has further encouraged the Centre to set up a seperate rhino protection force in near future. According to Union forest minister Prakash Javadekar who is visiting the national park the rhino population has gone up to 2889.The Union minister told reporters that the Centre has devised a mechanism to efficiently deal with the rhino poachers. 

Science training for teachers at IIT-G

4 killed in magic-truck collision

At least four persons died and over 20 others sustained serious injury at a road accident in Sonitpur district on Monday.The incident took place at Borgang near Bihali in the wee hours where a Tata Magic vehicle carrying over 25 people from a function at Bharakuli was on its way to Bedeti. As the vehicle reached Borgang, it suddenly collided head on a truck which was coming from the opposite direction amid incessent rains.    Local residents, who came out in large number found it difficult to rescue the passengers from the mangled vehicle because of the incessant rains.   Two of the deceased were identified as Keshab Tati, Parasuram Goala. Gory clash: 3 of a family dead

Three people of a family died in a clash along the Assam-Meghalaya border sending shockwaves across the state on Monday.The gory clash took place at Phulbari on Sunday evening where a youth hacked to death his  maternal uncle following a family clash. Identified as Khairul Islam, the youth was arrested by police hours after he Minaruddin Ahmed with a sharp knife. But the situation turned more violent turn when an angry mob in the area set on fire Khairul’s house were his parents died. Later policemen dispersed the mob before launching a massive man hunt to nab the cuprits involved in the gruesome incident.   

Uneasy calm in Lumding station

An uneasy calm grips Lumding railway station where the northeast frontier railway authorities have halted several passenger trains for repairing of tracks.Thousands of passengers have been waiting for the trains to leave for the destination from Sunday morning. Station officials told Assam Times that emergency repairing of the tracks are in progress and it would be completed by Monday. “From Monday the trains would be able to leave the station,” said the station officials. “We don’t understand why the train is not allowed to move. Landslip cuts off Itanagar

Surface communication from Bandordewa to Itanagar remains disrupted following the massive landslide in Arunachal Pradesh Sunday.The landslide took place at Kachengmara where a portion of the National Highway No 51-A collpased on Sunday morning following incessant rains during the last couple of days. Hundreds of trucks carrying essential commodities and other vehciles have been remaining standred since Sunday morning. “Steps are on to restore surface communication between Bandordewa and Itanagar. One killed in wild elephant attack

Despite a number of initiaitive, man elephant conflict refuses to die down. Wild elephants unleashed a reign of terror in Sonitpur district where one person was killed on Sunday.The tragic incident took place at Chariduwar area where a hard of wild elephants trampled to death a local resident of Sonaimiri area in the evening.Identified as Pente Limbo died on the spot. After hours of destroying crops and vegetables the elephants left for the dense jungles along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. 

NRL draws flak over elephant corridor

Centre for Conservation Education and Research (CCER) has strongly opposed and condemned the encroachment by the Numaligarh Refinery Limited on the traditional elephant corridor in Deopahar PRF under Golaghat Forest division. The organization alleged that NRL, winner of green awards, has been destroying nature with its activities that has increased elephant depredation in the area.Telgaram, where the Refinery is situated, is known for its elephant habitations. Flood wreaks havoc

The first wave of flood wreaked havoc in 6 districts rendering over 32,000 persons homeless on Sunday.According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the river Brahmaputra and its tributeries threaten to flow above the danger level if the rains continue in Arunachal Pradesh during the next couple of days.  The surging waters have already inundated over 100 villages in 10 revenue circles in six districts – Kokrajhar, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Bongaigaon and Dhemaji.This has forced the authorities to shift over 9,100 persons to 12 relief camps.Twelve relief camps have been opened, all in Kokrajhar district, with over 9,100 persons taking shelter there.Nearly 1,000 hectares of...
