Idol immersion to complete by noon

The Durga puja din and bustle have died down when the idols of the goddess were immersed on Friday. The immersion started from Thursday afternoon across the state. But all committees will complete the immersion process only on Friday. 

In Guwahati also, at least 100 puja committees immersed the idols in three places on the river Brahmaputra which took place till midnight. Others in the premier north eastern city are preparing to immerse the idols by 12 noon at the initiatives of the district administration. 

People thronged in thousands at Kachari Ghat, Pandu Ghat and Noonmati to see the immersion from early in the morning.

Assam joins the nation in the Gandhi Jayanti celebration on Friday to mark birth anniversary of the mahatma with a day long programme.Seminar on Gandhian ideology, drawing competition and Bhajan recital are lined up across the state on the occasion. Prominent citizens in Guwahati thronged the Gandhi Mandap in Ulubari area in the morning to pay tribute to the father of the nation on his birth anniversary.Freedom fighters along with many other parties and various organizations are holding community prayers across the state on the occasion.
Scheduled tribe status for six ethnic communities in Assam is unlikely before the Assembly elections polls. One after another hurdles seem to have compounded the process to accord the much-awaited status.According to the ministry of tribal affairs, they have not received anything from Dispur to change the modalities for the new status for Ahom, Koch, Muttock, tea tribes, Chutia, Morans. The ministry has been expecting its opinion from chief minister Tarun Gogoi which has not been received.  The possibility of the delay came to light when a delegation of a student organizations met union tribal affairs minister Jual Ornam in New Delhi recently.

The Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS) and Assam State Blood Transfusion Council (ASBTC) observed National Voluntary Blood Donation Day on Thursday with a flurry of activities.The state level function was organized at International Convention Centre in Guwahati. Welcoming the participants in the meeting, ASACS Project Director Dhiraj Choudhury said, “All healthy persons should come forward to donate blood. ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah’s mother Miliki Baruah passed away at her own residence in Jeraigaon on Thursday. Baruah, who was bed ridden for the last couple of weeks died at around 12 noon. People cutting across political affiliation have condoled her death and conveyed their deep sympathy for the bereaved family members.
In a move that would encourage the late night commuters in Guwahati, the Assam State Transport Corporation is introducing night services across the city from Thursday. ASTC officials told Assam Times that the corporation initially is running 20 on three arterial routes from 8 at night.“Our buses will ply on the Khanapara round trip covering Panbazar, Adabari, Basistha Chariali while another route will cover from Jalukbari to Khanapara via Adabari-Uzanbazar-Ganeshguri. The third route will cover from the Forest Gate to ISBT via Noonmati, Uzanbazar, Jalukbari,” said an ASTC official. The fares against the night bus service would be 50 per cent more than the existing fare of city buses.
Behali reserved forest has become a safe den for timber smugglers who have been plundering forest resources without any hindrance. One person was killed when the smugglers fired upon a team of guards on Wednesday.  The incident took place in Rongagorah block where the forest guards found an unidentified body with bullet injury mark.

Settlement of villagers in the Kaziranga National Park triggers an intensified war of words between Mrinal Kumar Saikia and Akhil Gogoi. The BJP leader and businessman Saikia has moved the Gauhati High Court seeking its intervention to evict the settlers to save the world heritage site. But the KMSS leader is dead opposed to the idea saying the settlers would help the national park free from the illegal settlers. The KMSS leader who held a huge rally in Kaziranga on Wednesday said that they won’t allow anybody to evict the indigenous lot. Gogoi held the rally after Saikia moved the Gauhati High Court for its intervention to evict the settlers in the world heritage site.
