Scribes remember Dipak Mahanta

City based scribes and well wishers of Dipak Mahanta, who had recently died in a road mishap, paid homage to him in a function organized at Guwahati Press Club on Saturday. The attending journalists, while mourning Mahanta’s untimely death, emphasized on preservation of his creations for the benefit of future generation. Mahanta, who was a dedicated theatre activist and a journalist penned, designed and directed a number of plays including ‘Ulanga Roja’, ‘Malati Mem’, ‘Holi’, ‘Pinhole Camera’, ‘Gajapuria’, ‘Bhotaram Totaram’, ‘Aadipath’, ‘Dhaniramor Theatre’, ‘Kurma Avatar’, ‘Tejimola’, ‘Dhodar Alir Tender’, ‘Jadughar’ etc.

He also prepared scripts for hundreds of documentaries relating to various socio-cultural issues. Graduated from Biswanath College in 1979, Mahanta was partially involved with the profession of journalism during his productive days through different newspapers like ‘Mohajati’, ‘Agnigarh’, ‘Boodhbar’, ‘Natun Dainik, ‘Dainik Pratibimba’ and ‘Asomiya Pratidin’. He joined NewsTimeAssam as a producer and started television journalism career. Lately Mahanta was involved with AssamTalks as a senior producer.

The speakers including Manas Kumar Mahanta, Raman Bora, Sanjib Phukan, Mrinal Bora, Rupam Barua, Jagadindra Raichoudhiry, Nava Thakuria, Jesim Raja etc highlighted the simplicity of Mahanta, even though he had to fight all along for survival and creations.

Meanwhile, Mahanta’s family members have performed the rituals at his Tezpur residence with Adyashraddha today and Matsyasparsha scheduled for Monday next.

Broad day light robbery leaves city police red faced

GUWAHATI: Two bikers snatched away a bag containing money on the road leaving the Guwahati police red faced on Wednesday. 9 officers face handwriting test

GUWAHATI: Nine more ACS, APS and allied service officers on Wednesday are facing hand writing test in connection with the APSC scam. In response to the order issued by the special operation unit of Dibrugarh police, all these nine officers appeared the test at the Guwahati based SB headquarters in the morning.  They include four ACS officers along with 2 APS officers and one each of tax inspector and excise inspector. Kids charred to death in Basistha

GUWAHATI: Three minor boys were charred to death when suspected miscreants set afire at least ten huts in Guwahati on Tuesday. The incident took place at Patorchi area near Basistha in the wee hours where unidentified miscreants who have been terrorizing these people for the last couple of weeks set on fire the huts.   Local residents told www.assamtimes.com that the three kids could not come out since they were in deep sleep and their parents only managed to come out of the burning huts. Rhino poacher dead in Pobitora

JAGIROAD: A Naga rhino poachers died at  fierce gun battle with the forest guards in Pobitora on Tuesday. The gunfight which lasted for nearly one hour took place in the wee hours. Acting on a tip off that a gang of 4-5 poachers managed to sneak in to the sanctuary forest guards started fanning in the vulnerable areas where the encounter took place. One of the rhino poachers died and four others are believed to have vanished from the spot.          

Uproar marks start of Assam budget session
