As a maiden event for the Cotton College State University, the Cotton university Students’ Union (CUSU) in association with Roots Institute and Guidelines Institute, Panbazar organised the first ever Cotton College State University All Assam Inter Institutional Debate Competition2016 on 30th April, 2016 at the Sudmerson Hall of Cotton College. The chief Guest for the debate competition was Mayur Bora along with the Vice Chancellor of CCSU who delivered the Inaugural speech. The topic for the debate competition is as follows:

The event saw the participation of students from many prominent educational institutions of Assam and they spoke both in Assamese and in English. The Speaker of the Debate was Professor Jagadish Goswami, Head of Dept. of Economics of B.Barooah College while the Judges were Umi Deka (lawyer and a senior debater) and Nabajit Borthakur (News Editor, DY365).

Security forces claimed to have gunned down three hard core NDFB-S rebels during a series of counter insurgency operations in Kokrajhar district on Sunday. The three insurgents were killed in three different incidents of shoot outs in the wee hours. According to information, they were killed in encounters at a dense jungle. They include Rahul Basumatary and Ritu Basumatary. Police further claimed to have seized four pistols, hand grenades from their possession.

An escalating tension keeps Raha on the boil after a local resident died in police firing when he along with thousands of people enforced a bandh on the National Highway No 37 demanding the proposed AIIMS in the area. Local residents in large number thronged the vital road forcing police and para military forces to sprang upon them in the morning. A section of agitated people tried to attacked the convoy of MLA Piyush Hazarika on his way to the house of Mintu Deori, who was killed in Friday’s police firing. Earlier, the local residents grilled a group of ministers who visited the bereaved family members of the deceased protester.
Hours after he was elected as the CLP leader in Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu staked claimed to form the new Government in Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday. Immediately after the CLP meeting in Itanagar, accompanied by Nabam Tuki, Kalikho Pul, Takam Sanjay and Podi Richo, the former chief minister’s son meet Governor Tathagat Roy and staked the claim. But before that in the morning, Tuki resigned as Chief Minister. These scheme of things have forced Roy to suspend the assembly floor test. The saffron party legislators gave outside support to the Kalikho Pul Government after the Centre lifted the president’s Rule. According to the Congress legislators, BJP played a crucial role in the drama where Pul managed to grab the hot seat. “The dissidence by Kalikho Pul and his associates gathered momentum when they got direct support from a circle of BJP leaders in New Delhi. Pul and his associates stayed in New Delhi for several months formulating strategies to dislodge Tuki. Comprising Chandra Mohan Patowary, Hitendra Nath Goswami, Keshab Mahanta, the team had to face the ire as they promised Rs 5 lakh ex gratia in addition to a government job to one of his family members. An eerie silence prevails at Raha in Nagaoan district a day after a local boy was killed in police firing on a group of protesters who demanded AIIMS in the area. Several local organizations have strongly come out in protest against the firing incident where identified as Mintu Deori was killed. Local shops and markets have refused to open in the area. The Government offices have registered a thin attendance on Saturday. But the local organizations and individuals are stick to the demands for the proposed AIIMS in Raha. One person was killed when a passenger carrying bus Binapani express (AS13 3681) collided with a Mahindra Bolero vehicle (TR-01 V 0226) at NH-31 Dhakpara area under Baihata Charali PS on Thursday. The bus was on its way from Guwahati to Tangla when it collided with the Bolero at Baihata Chariali. The driver of the Bolero died as an impact of the accident critically injuring four passengers of the Bolero, police said. The injured have been rushed to Tola Ram Bafna Civil Hospital, Amingaon. The dead have not been identified till the filling of this report.
In yet another blow to the poll-hit Congress in Assam, a sitting legislator has joined BJP on Thursday. He is none other than Mansing Rongpi who deserted the opposition party much to the delight of the ruling BJP. With this, the strength of the main opposition party has gone down to 25 while BJP has won yet another seat. The Karbi political leader was believed to have been unhappy with the party leadership and during the last couple of months he was in close touch with BJP leaders who finally gave him the green signal to join the ruling party.
