Tearful farewell to Anjan Dutta

The mortal remains of Anjan Dutta were consigned to flames on Friday a day after the APCC president died of cardiac arrest in New Delhi. After last respect to the lifeless former minister in Guwahati and Sivasagar, Dutta’s body was taken to Gaurisagar where he was cremated with full state honour in the afternoon. Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma, MP Ripun Bora were prominent among those who were present at the cremation ground. Before that thousands of bereaved Congress men received Dutta’s body at the Jorhat Airport in the morning and was taken to Sivasagar to facilitate his fans to pay their last respect in Sivasagar town and his birth place Gayan gaon.

Dutta died of cardiac ailment on Thursday morning at the All India Institute of Medical Science a couple of weeks after he was rushed to it. The party in rank and file have condoled his death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

The overall flood situation has gone from bad to worse following the incessant rains that cripple normal life in the state during the last one week.More and more areas in ten districts have come under the surging waters of the river Brahmaputra and its tributaries during the last 24 hours.Flood waters on Saturday inundated new areas in Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Sonitpur districts. Over one lakh people have been reeling under flood in Barpeta district damaging 2,800 hectares of crops.The Brahmaputra is still flowing above the danger mark in Nimatighat in Jorhat and Dhubri where roads, embankments and bridges were washed away.
The authorities have restricted water transport services on the Brahmaputra in Nimatighat and Majuli island because of a rising water level of the mighty river.Official sources told Assam Times that the plying of boats and other vessels after sunset has been banned in other segments of the Brahmaputra.
Flood situation refuses to improve in Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, Goalpara and Dibrugarh districts on Saturday as the rivers are still flowing above the danger marks.The water levels in Dibang, Lohit, Subansiri and Siang in Arunachal Pradesh have been rising because of excessive rain during the last one week.
Union sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday alleged gross misutilization of the minority welfare fund in the state. Addressing a meeting at the District Library in Guwahati, he said that the minority welfare fund has been failing to percolate benefit to the people for whom it was meant. “This is because of gross misappropriation of the fund by the Assam government. I beg to appeal to the people to keep a close watch on the implementation of the minority welfare fund as the Centre has extended the base this time,” he said.BJP minority cell leader Abdul Rashid Ansari was prominent among those who attended the meeting. 
Two prominent former student leaders are set to join BJP on Sunday. Former AJYCP president Manoj Baruah and former ATTSA leader Taresh Goala are set to join the party at a meeting in the District Library in presence of top leaders of the ruling party. Apart from state unit president Siddharth Bhattacharya, Union sports minister Sarbanada Sonowal are scheduled to attend the meeting on Sunday.

The claim of an intensified counter insurgency operation inside the Myanmar territories seems to have raised doubt when the neighbourng country denied such strike to flush out any rebel outfit on it soil. Myanmar made it clear that the authorities have no knowledge of any counter insurgency operation inside their territories. The neighbouring said that they have nothing to do if the military strike is taking place along the international border. The denial came to light hours after the insurgent outfits denied any army strike. ULFA (I) chief Paresh Baruah told a section of media over telephone that no insurgent died in the military strike along the border.
