NEW DELHI: A countrywide massive protest begins against the arrest of Akhil Gogoi when farmers and social activists are thronging in thousands in Delhi to demand immediate release of the peasant leader from Assam who has been languishing in jail under the National Security Act.
As many as 156 farmers' organizations from across the country are holding a huge protest meeting at the Ramleela Ground in the capital city to go all out against the BJP-led government which jailed the RTI activist under NSA only a day after he publicly appealed to the people to remain prepared to take up arms if need be.
"We are here to mount pressure on the intolerant government who jailed our adviser only for criticising the government. We are not alone. The entire farming fraternity is with us," said Bipin Das, who has come from Lakhimpur along with around 200 others.
Surjet Singh from Amitshar said,"the BJP led government is scared of Akhil Gogoi, who keeps exposing the BJP ministers and leaders. Had he not been kept in jail he could have made many more expose. We are with him."
"Nobody can gag our voice of protest. We are a huge force to be reckoned with. This government must read the writings on thr wall," said Drepa Srinivasan, a farming community leader who has come to join the rally from Andhra Pradesh.
Dozens of noted social activists and political party leaders are joining the rally to mark the start of the agitation demanding immediate and unconditional release of Akhil Gogoi.
