Panel for probe into border influx

25 Oct 2015 - 6:22am | AT New Delhi

A Supreme Court panel set up to study the influx across the Indo-Bangla border suggests the country’s apex court to institute a high level probe in to the entire issue confronting the north eastern region for decades.

According to the Upamonyu Hazarika panel report submitted before the SC, the need of the hours is an independent probe into the allegations of a process that enables a Bangladeshi passport holder to own land in Assam and strangely to contest an Assembly election. It suggests the impending grave danger of the illegal migrant lobby.

Hazarika, in his report suggests a slew of  restrictions in the transfer of land only to those who have been citizens of India in the year 1951 and their descendants.

The report further talks of a sterile zone along the international border which will help Assam get rid of the problem. A policy decision is required from Delhi and Dispur although the operational agency in place wants a sterile zone.

The country’s apex court is expected to take up the third repot of the Hazarika panel next week. On the basis of the earlier two reports, the Court directed the Centre and the state to take corrective measures.
