The North-East Finale of the WWF-India Wild Wisdom Global Challenge 2023 was held on November 3, 2023, at Royal Global University in Guwahati, Assam. This year's challenge was themed "Birds of the World" and was open to students from classes 6 to 9.

A total of 80 schools with 160 students from Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Tripura, and various districts of Assam participated in the finale.

After a closely contested competition, the team from Sarla Birla Gyan Jyoti School, Assam, represented by Ritvik Anand (class 6) and Garvita Jain (class 8), emerged as the North East Champions. The 2nd position was bagged by the team from Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya Tezpur, Assam, and the 3rd position by South Point School, Guwahati.

The winning team will represent the North East in the National level of the challenge, which will be held online this month.

ED indicts BJP leader in bank scam

GUWAHATI: In yet another major setback for Assam BJP unit, the enforcement directorate  has chargesheeted a senior party leader in a bank fraud case. He is none other than Jitu Goswami whom the saffron party fielded in Samoguri constituency in the last assembly to take on Congress candidate Rockybul Hussain. Goswami along with three others allegedly embazzled ₹3 crore from the Indian Oversees Bank a couple of years back which ED was probing. The ED, probing the allegations on Wednesday filed the charge sheeted Goswami, his wife along with two others.The central agency further, seized his property worth ₹3 crore in this connection.

Sonowal expanding team

GUWAHATI: At least eight BJP, AGP and BPF legislators are taking oath as new colleagues in the Sarbananda Sonowal’s council of ministers on Thursday. From BJP Siddharth Bhattacharjee, Piyush Hazarika, Tapan Kumar Gogoi, Angorlata Deka, Bhabesh Kalita, Sumung Ronghang are taking oath at a function in the Raj Bhawan. Governor Dr Jagdish Mukhi is administering the new inductees the oath of office and secrecy. AGP legislator Phani Bhushan Chaudhury and his BPF counterpart Chandan Brahma are also taking oath in the ceremony. For the first time the year old Sonowal team is expanding. The strong contenders who were left this time include Prasanta Phukan, Padma Hazarika and Atul Bora.

Kuladhar Saikia new DGP

GUWAHATI: Senior police officer Kuladhar Saikia will take over as director general of police on Monday. The special director general Saikia will take charge from Mukesh Sahay who is going on retirement on that day. Saikia, the 1985 batch IPS officer is also an award winning Assamese litterateur who received the coveted Sahitya Akademy Award.

Tribute to Simanta Bhagawati

Guwahati: The media fraternity will remember journalist Simanta Bhagawati, who passed away on 21 April in a city hospital following a massive stroke, in a meeting to be held at Guwahati Press Club on Friday next. It may be noted that Simanta, 53, was also a sportsman and faced the stroke on 19 April while playing tennis at a city court. He was associated with The Assam Tribune till May last year. A man of humour, Simanta leaves behind his wife and a daughter with other relatives and well-wishers. Journalist Forum Assam (JFA) appeals everyone in the media family to join in the memorial meeting starting at 3 pm of 27 April 2018.

Army jawans dead in mishap

ITANAGAR: Three army jawans died and four others sustained serious injury when the vehicle on which they were travelling met with a mishap in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday. The mishap took place in the morning at Dibang Valley as the army jawans based in Sapakhowa in Sadiya were travelling in the neighbouring north eastern state. Three jawans died on the spot while four others have been undergoing treatment at the army based hospital.      

Ghost of witch huntings haunt again

Kokrajhar:: The police have arrested eight persons a day after killed a person and injured a woman in the name of witch hunting incidents in Chirang and Baska districts sending statewide shock and anger.The victim in Chirang is an elderly person who was killed by a group of villagers accusing him of indulging in witchery. In Baska, a group of villagers mercilessly assaulted a woman with the same allegations. According to police, some unidentified miscreants brutally assaulted Sarat Basumatary at Runikhata in Chirang with sticks to be left critically injured. Senior scribe passes away

Guwahati: City based senior scribe Simanta Bhagawati, who was associated with The Assam Tribune, passed away this (Saturday 21 April) morning. A popular media columnist and also fond of tennis, Simanta faced a massive stroke two days back while he was playing in a city court. His cremation is scheduled to take place this afternoon. Prior to it, the employees of The Assam Tribune and members of Guwahati Press Club will play last tributes to him.

Woman gangraped, killed in Bijni

BIJNI: Yet another incident of gruesome gangrape and murder sends huge shock, anger and acrimony across the state of Assam on Friday.  The incident took place in Chirang district of BTAD area where a woman was believed to have gangraped and killed at an open field at night.  According to police, local residents spotted the body of the woman at Mulapothar in the morning who on Thursday afternoon was attending the Bihu function where Zubeen Garg performed.  Bijni police have registered a case and investigation is going on. 14 yr old gangraped in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: In yet another shocking incident, five miscreants gangraped a 14 year old girl before dumping on the roadside in Lakhimpur on Thursday. The incident took place in Dalhat where local resident rescued the victim in the critical condition in the wee hours. Now she is battling for life at the hospital.    A police team is investigating the incident. “We are investigating. Since the girl’s condition is not so conducive to record statement we are gathering more evidence to proceed. Beyond that we can’t say anything right now,” said a police officer.
